Booked the flights 24th May-6th June.

Hiring a bike from www.bikingviking.is this time as the ferry takes far too long from up here and I only have a maximum of two weeks.

After last years cycling expedition through ashstorms to an erupting volcano at Eyjafjallajokull i'm taking the sensible option.

Cycling 800 miles in ten days on a heavily laden Thorn Sherpa and camping in deserted ash covered campsites made me realise a motorbike is best when the headwinds are so relentless. What takes an our to drive can take all day to cycle.....!

That trip was a real challenge as I hadn't done any serious cycling for over ten years even though i'd done a lot of training before it was still difficult due to the exposed roads. Tailwinds were very good though when I had one, over 20mph with a tailwind became 8mph with a headwind. Gravel roads were tricky at times aswell.

Bike hire is expensive but when you look at the ferry costs and eight days of travelling it's starts to make sense. We can be in Iceland in just over two hours from Glasgow.

Our plan on this trip is to visit the area affected by last years volcanic eruption and catch up with the Icelandic farmers I met and see how the crops and livestock have recovered from the ash and flooding. I'd also like to travel into Thorsmork to see the ash contamination there as it was still closed when I visited last year.

The short ferry crossing from Bakki To the Westmann Islands should be in operation now so a quick visit to the still very hot Eldfjall volcano on Heimaey is always good.

We'd also like to spend time in Snaefellsnes then north Iceland, Akureyri, Myrvatn, Jokulsargljufur, Husavik and then the Eastfjords to catch up with friends in Eskifjordur. This will mean driving all of the ringroad again but it's mostly good driving and there are some pretty spectacular sights on the way round.

The interior roads will still be closed with snow aswell as the road to Askja, even the Dettifoss road could be closed but it depends on the winter.

I'm thinking of 'Geocaching' something near the ringroad for passing UKGSers......! Any ideas?

Ice Pack!

Any other UKGSers heading off to Iceland this summer?

Doing a 'dry run' of packing up the motorbike and camping gear for this trip for Mrs P and myself!

I didn't quite realise how much space this stuff takes when you try to pack it all in a couple of bags instead of wearing most of it.......!

Helmets and boots take up a good bit of packing space and the jackets and trousers don't exactly pack down small with all that armour and
I don't fancy the hassle of wearing bike gear through Glasgow/Keflavik/Manchester customs but it may come to that.

We do need to take our Hein Gericke waterproofs aswell because experience has shown in the past that even our best Goretex BMW/HG suits aren't up to the weather in Iceland at that time of year.

I'm even thinking of ditching all the camping gear and just taking the sleeping bags and using hostels, cabins and cheaper hotels and guesthouses on this trip but the camping gear gives us total independence and freedom to get of the beaten track(or slightly used track in this case)

Our camping kit usually consists of

1 Vango 2 man Force 10 Tent
2 three season sleeping bags and liners
2 Thermarest sleeping mats
1 Trangia meths stove
1 Thermos flask
Plates/cuttlery set

Even this has been cut down to bare essentials over our last few trips into the 'arctic north'!

Another option would be to leave most of our camping kit and just buy some of what we need when we arrive but that's just wasteful.

Any helpful ideas from folk who've flown with their camping/biking gear?

Yes, my 'folks' suggested that but I thought it would be quite expensive. Sending the camping kit that way would make sense though as it's reasonably lightweight but bulky.

I also have a 'spare' Vango 200+ tent, sleeping bag and Trangia stove which I could easily have left in Iceland for use on my next trip.......Damn I should have left it all there last time.....!:blast

I'll look into that and also contact www.vikingbking.is and see what most of the other folks do.

If we didn't take the camping kit i'm sure Mrs P. wouldn't complain if we're staying 'under tin' rather than using the tent!

I've even contemplated buying an F650GS and leaving/keeping it in Iceland as after a couple of trips it would have more than paid for itself.

Many thanks

We're going to be taking a reasonable supply of dried food etc. are you, or can you rely on buying grub from time to time to take with you?

We're going to be taking a reasonable supply of dried food etc. are you, or can you rely on buying grub from time to time to take with you?

On our first trip we carried 'Oat So Simple' porridge, pasta and lots of 'survival' food, chocolate and those posh Nescafe coffee and chocolate sachets etc.(four days worth incase we got stuck somewhere bad)

Now I don't take anything and just go to the local supermarket or shop same as the locals do. Even the smallest towns(they're all small) have a small supermarket type place. I'd take my own bottle of whisky though as it's very expensive there.....!

When you come off the ferry in Seydisfjordur there's a small Bonus supermarket or somesuch just at the Egillstadir junction or Egillstadir itself has very good services. That's where you'll need to decide which way you are going to ride the Ringroad/Route 1 or if you're riding down to Askja and across the interior but there's other places you can do that aswell.

Watch out for opening times at the weekends and in the local fuel station cafe restuarant the Daginns Rett or daily meal is best. It could be Icelandic lamb or fish and often you'll see the local workers coming in for their lunch which is good.

My favourite Icelandic foods are

Skyr Yogurt
Islensku Kjott Supa Traditional lamb soup
Hambogarar med franskar og cocktail sosu Hamburger and chips
Egills Appelsin Orange a bit like Fanta.
Hardfiskur Dried fishy crisps good with...
Viking Bjor Beer

There's a lot of American influenced fast food including the 'Colonel' and Subway but Iceland also has it's own specialist foods including Icelandic lamb, Minky whale and puffin are also on the menu in quite a few restaurants(don't ask how I know)
