identify part for f800gs

If it is 8mm, and you can't find any, I'm sure I've got some in the garage I can send you.

Cool thx.
I'm calling up some dealerships. They are looking. Hopefully I will have some in a few days. I need a few extra, just in case.....

How do I prevent this from happening again?
I'm not entirely sure I cross-threaded it.
You can see in the photo how I did go past all the threads in the rivnut.
The rivnut broke as I tried to pull the bolt out.

I'm just trying to get some piece of mind here.....

TBH this is probably a 'one off'. These Rivnuts (Rivetnuts, Nutserts) are fairly simple technology. As they require overtightning to install, I doubt that you've overtightened it, or even cross threaded it. There have been a few solutions on here, but the best is to put it back to standard. I can't remember how this happened in the first place, I guess you're fitting a rack. Once you've fixed it, and fitted your rack, I doubt it will be disturbed again until you sell the bike.

Fix, fit and forget.

I found some from mcmaster-carr.
Everything seems to be ok, except that the Body Diameter (A) is 13.46 mm.
I measured the hole in the subframe with my digital caliper and it's 10.49mm.
Is the rivnut supposed to be slightly over-sized?
I'm thinking it's too big.....

I'm at the point where I think this is the only option.
:blast
I went to 2 dealerships and 2 industrial supply stores.
I was able to get a m8 rivnut, but the drill size (the hole that the entire rivnut fits into) is 13.5mm. I could drill into my subframe, but that would suck. Plus, the hole in the subframe is pretty close to the edge of the frame itself....

^^^ I can't edit my original post.
I'm getting a rivnut that's 5/16 (non-metric). It has a diameter that should fit.
I now need a 5/16 size bolt, which shouldn't be a big deal.

I forgot to mention that I got the 13.5mm rivnut from a bmw dealership, so not even a bmw dealership has the 10.5mm sized rivnut. Weird.

13mm diameter sounds like M10. I've looked at a few specs and M8 are all around 10 to 11mm hole diameter such as these http://cheapestrivnuts.co.uk/splined.aspx

Might be worth checking you were given the right size parts before putting an odd size fastener on the bike.

Ok. This seriously pisses me off. I went to a few well known stores, bmw dealerships, and websites to get something like this.
:censor:

Maybe I can order from the uk, then.....

When I use my digital calipers to get the hole size, it's 10.5-10.7mm.
(Yeah, I get a different measurement each time....)
Do you think it's ok to go with a rivnut that needs a 11mm hole?

If you're going to this trouble, it might as well be right. I thought rivnuts etc were mostly American. I'm sure you can buy some over there. Maybe try Rivnuts head office and customer service.

I did find one store, but they wanted a minimum order of 500. :blast

I went ahead and ordered the correct ones (I HOPE!!!) from http://cheapestrivnuts.co.uk/splined.aspx
Nice folks to deal with. :thumb2
It would be funny if the rivnuts were made in the USA and shipped to the UK, only to be imported back into the USA. What a crazy modern world we live in.

Hopefully it all works out. Right now I'm just waiting for them to arrive. At least I'll have a few extra for spares and to offer up to the local BMW owners club.

Ok...this is what I have now...you can see how the rivnut isnt deformed 100% like in the diagram.
it still looks ok, i think.
i'm worried about messing up the rivnut if i keep tightening.
the rivnut doesn't appear loose or anything....it doesn't spin in place.
there is some aluminum stripping off on the bottom side of the subframe hole.
once i saw that, i thought it would be a good time to stop.
what do you think?

My nightmare is finally over. What a pita it was to replace the rivnut!
Completely my fault.....I think I cross-threaded a bolt for my top rack plate.
I tried to back the SS bolt out and the rivnut began turning in the frame. It had sheared off into two pieces.
Warning to everyone: insert the two rear bolts and hand tighten first, then insert the forward bolts and hand tighten.
Tighten everything with a wrench using a star pattern. :rob
Duh....I knew better.... :blast

I had to take the plastic off the tail section and then dremel through a stainless steel bolt! Sparks were flying! That dremel is actually pretty awesome!
I wanted to replace the rivnut, but I couldn't find them anywhere! There were some at Maryland Metric, but they wanted me to buy 500 of them.
I ordered a few from the UK.....
I couple of other people (online) had the same nightmare, so I'm not the only dummy.

Anyways, I finally got my toprack installed.
That's a modified pelican case. It even has an organizer velcroed inside of it. Very handy while touring!!
The square shape makes the USABLE space my greater than the contoured cases, like the givis.

I photochopped my license plate out of paranoia, but now that I think of it, there's something funny about it. We have these new plates commemorating the War of 1812 with Britain.....

Big thanks for you folks who helped me out! :beerjug:
Now......Let's never speak of this again......:augie
