If I added a GS12 to the garage would I regret it?

I have been looking at the threads here and noted there seems to be a reccurence of faults listed and I wanted to know if these have been dealt with and that a fully serviced 2nd hand 1200 would no longer be likely to suffer a re-occurence?

There seem to be a lot of mentions of the bevel box or final drive and also of the 2 bearings that support this (I have had these fail in my GS11 once but I think that was due to wheelies by the 1st owner). Was a cause ever found and do the current replacement parts if fitted resolve the problem?

I also saw mention of the fuel pump or its controller, again is this a problem that was fixed by replacement parts?

I would like to buy one of the GS12's but I would like to make sure that any problems have been ironed out by you lot first!

Just buy the fecking thing and find out for yourself. It's what most bods do.... Some are even quite happy that they did.

It's a machine, some of which are perfect and some of which are not.

55,635 miles in and had a few problems, but don't see a viable alternative bike.

I went for newest I could afford, failed to find private '09 (my target) at right price so settled for dealer supplied '08 - but got a 12 month warranty in the bargain.

My extensive research (well, winding this lot up mainly) revealed there are a host of common faults, many fixed now, a few unresolved and the remaining one(s) seem to be like a lottery, and as I never win that I hope similarly the law of averages will keep me from FD grief.

Love the bike, been riding in around on crap roads in crap weather, with crap tyres and I am loving it

I am in the fantastic position of having both an 1150 and a 1200ADV. Both bikes are fantastic and there is nothing I would rather ride.

My advice would be by a 1200 from a dealer (I didn't), with a 12 month warranty (I didn't have one) and extend it afterwards. (Wish I had the choice).

When it eventually lets you down- either with a small niggle or a full-blown catastrophe (that bit does apply to me- FD failure and ABS servo failure in the same week) at least the warranty will get you out of trouble.

I don't think its really a case of 1200's being any more unreliable than anything else out there, its just that when they do go badly wrong, it will be very expensive to fix. You shouldn't really need to buy an extended warranty, but its small fry in comparison with having to fund a FD or ABS unit replacement.

No you wouldnt. I love mine to bits and wouldnt swap it for anything now its got some oil in it.... Absolutely make sure you have the luxury of a warranty though, without question. Oh and have an emergency slush fund for servicing cos you'll fcuking need it!!!!!....

Had a 90 mile blast on a '10 model today as a loan bike whilst my K12S was being serviced.
was well impressed
Beautiful handling & lots of power - rode like my R 80 GS - but can actually overtake

And as for servicing costs - me K cost £538 for a 24K service (did include a new set of PR2's though)

GS1200

Went to Gasrmisch, Austria in July on ny K1200 GT, was accompanied by a GS and a GSA. Liked them both but with dodgy knees struggled to get on the GSA due to the height of the seat. Got back on a Friday night and bought a GS 1200 from Pidcocks the following morning. Ridden it for 1500 miles so far and absolutely love it. Got Adenture Bike Warehouse to fit crash bars, HD head light and HD spot lights. Undoubtedly the best bike I have ever owned and the list of bikes owned is a long one. Almost forgot, fitted a Givi adjustable screen it is absolutely brilliant. Keeps the rain off, reduces wind noise dramatically and can ride in the rain with my visor up, looking over the screen with no rain hitting me in the face
