If I don’t use / keep my Nav VI, what should I buy and still keep use of the whirly wheel?

I read that Garmin were no longer developing Basecamp as a software program, apparently already for a few years; that's not to say they will not continue updates and sending these out.
I also have MRA which I find great however, I also understand that the BMW NAV 6 is the last one Garmin will produce for BMW. BMW wanting to go their own way with their own app. With me being a traditional old fart and liking creating my routes in Basecamp or MRA and uploading them to a device preferably that links to the wizzy wheel of my GSA, if the Nav 6 goes what should I be looking at buying?

I have started you a fresh thread, not least as everyone will have their favourite…. Just like gloves.

There is nothing wrong with:

A. The third edition Navigator VI and / or with the Navigator V or IV. If you must have wonder wheel connectivity, use one of those three.

B. The Garmin XT devices, but you lose the wonder wheel connectivity. Whether anyone makes a device that replicates the wonder wheel’s control of an XT, I have no idea. Someone will know… or guess.

There are several pretty good ‘dumb’ devices, that will mirror a phone, running the MyRoute Navigation app and / or a number of other apps. There’s lots of threads on these. These would include BMW’s own device, which will, of course be compatible with the wonder wheel.

There is then the whole tablet thing, too. See the dedicated sub-section. Some may integrate with the wonder wheel, whilst others might need some additional gubbins… or a prod with a finger.

The BMW focused Chigee device will give you that same kind of wonder whizzy wheel control as the NAV V1. But it will be through a phone app in CarPlay or Android auto.

You don’t need the BMW version. If you have the non-BMW version (the original Lite or the Play) you can use the CGRC adapter which gets you Wonderwheel functionality.

I’ve had the original AIO-5 lite since February and done over 10k miles with no issues. My wife has done about 3k since the beginning of Sept with her BMW version. We haven’t noticed any difference in terms of usability.

The CGRC-CAN doesn't give the same functionality as the BMW AIO 5 play or CGRC-LIN. The CGRC-CAN uses the indicator switch, which has its problems in certain circumstances, not ideal. Either of the CGRC versions is an additional module.

I have the AIO 5 lite device but that's not the removable one. I've tried it with both the CGRC-CAN and LIN. The LIN makes it exactly the same functionality as the NAV VI.

I know. I have the CGRC LIN. I started off with the CGRC CAN (it’s all that there was in February when we were beta testing), but got the LIN for free when I bought my wife’s BMW version. That’s why my CAN module is on the for sale section.

I never had an issue with the indicator. There was a small period of time where Chigee used that to select things, but then they changed it as people didn’t like it. You can now scroll up and down and nudge left/right to select. That’s what I was doing before my LIN arrived.

Either way, the point of my post was that you don’t have to have the BMW specific version for Wonderwheel usage - there are options.

The main thing about not having a LIN or the BMW version is that you don’t get things like tyre pressures on the Chigee as the CAN version doesn’t support it. Personally I don’t see the issue as I have all that information through the LIN and never use it. It’s easier to use the TFT and leave the Chigee on the CarPlay screen.

Some people have also fallen fowl to having the GPS connector on the bike, but it not being enabled in the bike software. Some have had success getting BMW to enable it (it costs), but some haven’t so have had no choice but to revert to using the CAN version.
