I've been posting the odd comment here and there prior to this and used the forum to decide on which gps in the first place (2610) how to fit it (BMW power cable & RAM mount) and then how to use it (Pan European's inestimable tips across a range of posts)

It all came good just in time for a 6 day solo trip to Switzerland. This was my first time riding abroad and certainly the longest period riding on my own.
The forum also gave me some ideas for a route and I was able to spend a couple of evenings trying to pick out some interesting roads.

I think during the six days I came to know the unit pretty well and in the end let it make a lot of the decisions about how I got to places.

Micheal's tip about settings for custom preferences was spot on and apart from one occasion when it tried to send me up a public footpath near Chamonix it did a damn fine job (unpaved roads indeed!). Occasionally I had to ‘force’ it to take in some known good roads by putting in some via points but the ability to just say ‘take me home’ the quickest way and see how long it would take was brilliant.

I travelled through places I would never have dreamed of finding and down roads in the middle of nowhere with absolute confidence all the way through Germany on the way down and France on the way back.

Before I left I'd wondered whether I'd blown big money on an extravagent toy that I would later regret as it failed to reach reserve on ebay. Now it ranks as second only to the GS itself as shrewdest thing I ever bought.

I was at my most grateful for it when it detoured me round Strasbourg in the heaviest rain I’ve ever known and when traffic came to a standstill. Five miles up the road I was back on track having got an insight into life in the suburbs - amazing.

It also found me 5 petrol stations and two hotels when I needed them. All in all like having the most knowledgeable mate travel with you but without having the arguments (I left voice ‘off’).

So thanks to everyone on the forum for all your help and if you’re reading this thinking ‘shall I or shan’t I’ then ‘nuff said. :thumb

Would you have done the same trip without GPS ?

would I?

Thanks Taff

Good question - my partner persuaded me I should take the trip a few months ago (magnificent woman - bit of an adventurer herself).

I'd vowed to myself I'd do it but was a bit intimidated at the prospect and I was nervous as departure approached. I would have gone, but I think I would have ended up sticking to major roads for fear of getting lost and would have spent most of the time stopping to check that I was still on route. I may have been more motivated to join up with other riders as I travelled though so who knows what could have happened.

I think the main thing was it gave me the confidence to travel on my own- happily.

Thanks for posting the writeup. You did a great job of summarizing the single biggest advantage of using a good quality GPS on a moto - it leaves you free to concentrate on the riding, and having a good time, without always having to worry about which way to turn.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to CH - sorry I missed you. I normally spend a lot of time in CH (based in Zürich), but I was in Africa for the past 10 days, just got back.

Dabba, if this was Sunday 11 September - you were not alone. I rode back home from Andermatt and got caught in this downpour at Strasbourg and about half a dozen others further north..............lovely wasn't it
