If you’re ever in the Portabello road area.

Posted this on an entirely unrelated thread and thought it also deserves to be posted in the South East section,

You must visit Hassan’s Moroccan fried fish in Golbourne road/Portabello area for lunch .

I can’t recommend his food highly enough, for freshness, taste and value,
For years It was £7 for everything. He’s recently put the price up to £10/£11 depending on what fish,
It gets very busy on a Friday afternoon as the local mosque is very close
There’s a free motorbike parking bay almost opposite on the corner of Bevington road.
I’m now going to get everyone’s taste buds going by posting a few pics, sorry.

My God they look fantastic!

I think anecdotal information on London (like OP’s) is essential. It’s very easy to stumble into an overpriced shithole as an undiscerning tourist.
Last week when there, I found myself in a very authentic and low priced Chinese place. Ended up ordering chicken skewers that I thought were satay. Turned out to be gizzards??!! lol
Still tasty though 👍

Tried fried chickens feet yet ?
Or the delicious sounding beef honeycomb, which is actually cows stomach/tripe :D

I wax also a regular in the Galicia Bar in Portabello road ( 30 seconds walk from Hasssns fish).
We were usually the only English in the bar.
Genuine Spanish cooking, at amazing prices.
Then that bastard Ed Sheeran bought it, closed it down and turned it into a dive bar.. very unsuccessfully

Was intending to go tomorrow, but Hassan's is closed...

Looking at the prices…. I thought that there London was supposed to be expensive :fnikefork

Depends where you dine, and what day of the week you go.

Saturday/Sunday lunchtimes can particularly good value for Michelin starred restaurants and their set menu's.

Not as inexpensive as Hassan's but you still get the excellent food and service expected of a starred restaurant.

It is, if you’re a tourist and don’t know where to go. Same as any large city in the world.
I could take you to Italian restaurant with fantastic home made food where you’d struggle to spend £12 a head, an amazing Indian restaurant in Chelsea, that’s always full of Indian customers which costs about £25/£35 for two, and that’s a slap up meal with all the extras … the most important thing isn’t the price, it’s the quality of the food.
Plenty of other cheap restaurants about, but the food isn’t good.

How about this, a Dum Chicken byriani.
Gorgeous , £18 all in

Looks lovely :drool

Any town or city can have both overpriced eateries and reasonably priced quality places to eat, the trick is in finding them. Local knowledge pays dividends, cheers Neil.

When I worked in London on Whitehall I used to eat at the Chandos cafe in Chandos Place opposite the cop shop in Charing Cross, probably cheaper for a decent lunch there than my local town and better quality. It’s no longer on Google Maps so I assume it’s now closed.
