If you can, please help me refit the driveshaft to the gearbox.

I've recently taken out, and had the gearbox rebuilt on my 2002 1150GSA. The gearbox is nicely back in place but I am finding it impossible to get the gearbox output shaft snap ring in place without slightly stretching it. So it doesn't sit tight on the said shaft.
Then, when I try to replace the final dive shaft, it pushes the snap ring out of its groove.
I have been trying, for over three weeks off and on, to resolve this.
I'm getting nowhere.
I'm praying that someone knows how to do this.
It's driving me mental.
Anybody out there who can help me.
I have tried a new genuine BMW snap ring and one from Motorworks.
A crate of beer of your choice delivered to your door, awaits you on success.
Thank you for reading this

Or should the snap ring be fitted to the inside of the female front end of the drive shaft?

The snap ring fits inside the groove in the drive shaft … then you fit the driveshaft onto the gearbox output shaft
