When you kick the life out of it and it eventually opens, do not dismantle the entire top box from inside.
On the outside, under the handle there are 2 torx screws and 2 8mm nuts. Remove.
Take Off Handle. You will now have the problem in your hand. a 5mm diameter pin has fallen out of the handle and is now missing, so the toothed quadrant which is supposed to open the catches only moves 50% of what it should.
Hard to spot.
Get a 5mm x 30mm cap head Allen screw and self locking nut and replace the missing pin with this. That's it.

I had that problem. Lived with it till I changed bike. If I ever bought another rt I'd have a Givi e55 instead. Helpful post though. JJH

Does that 5mm pin have a circlip at each end?
I had a small bar drop out when I opened the box yesterday, couldn't for the life of me see where it came from.
The top ox still operates ok,

If you have a pic of your mod, that would be fantastic.

Box lock

Thanks for posting this Myke, now sorted.
I didn't need to remove the handle, just turned the box upside down to get at it.
I used a 40mm long bolt as there is plenty of space and I was to lazy to cut it shorter.
I compared my box alongside another to see where the bar had fallen out from.
Pic attached I hope to show new bolt replacing the bar with fiddling little circlips.
The lid opens and locks a treat now:thumb

I had the box off and already removed the lid for repainting when I started looking for the catch problem.
You are correct, there is no need to remove the lock. You are lazy though.
I took a 40mm stainless Allen Screw and cut it to 30mm. This meant that the catch not bearing on threads. For some reason, photos will not attach tonight, though I have done it often enough before.
