When the bike is still cold the change from 6th to 5th is as if the clutch is not working, its ok in other gears and does not seem to be slipping, when warmed up it seems ok. The bike is a 99 R1150GS with 39,000 miles on it.

Avy ideas?

How long do the clutches last I've had the bike since 15,000 miles the problem is recent?

Whip the gear lever off and clean/regrease the bushing, reassemble, ensuring the linkage adjuster is tight. If that doesn't solve it more, expensive, intervention/exploration may be required.:)

hmmmm

Not quite sure what you mean here... "the clutch is not working"? so the engine's just spinning then? Sounds like a false neutral.

These bikes have long suffered with the 5th/6th gear but never heard of it on a down change.

Got 50k on mine & clutch is still fine... had a new gearbox at 18k tho' cos of the 6th-5th jumping under load.

No perhaps a poor explanation, Pull the clutch in and its a grinding of gears until it drops in. It only happens when its cold ie just started in a morning and its ok once warmed up

Roger,

Been there, done that. Exactly what MMM said - grease up your linkage to remove the winter crap that builds up in it. WD40 might do a quick fix.
