Hi all,

Been a bit of a lurker for a while but the time has come for me to ask for some advice.
Left for work today, bike started fine as normal (1100GS) but as I turned the handle bars it cut out as if the ignition was turned off. Put it back on stand and it all came back on again. After a while of this happening I had a look round and jiggled the ignition wire (the one going into the ignition barrel) and the power came on then off etc. It seems I've got a loose connection in there.
So the question is :-
Is there a way of dismantling the bottom bit of the barrel so I can fix this loose wire or is it a complete new barrel including drilling out the old one?

any help/advice much appreciated!

I think it could be one of the cables that go from the barrel to under the tank. They make a tight bend and they are held together by plastic strings which can be very tight and can cut the wires. Worth having a look at them before tampering with the barrel me think

Hi carbold,

I was hoping that it was somewhere else but I 'jiggle' the wore right next to the barrel, without moving the rest of the wire it flicks on and off so I think it's defo the connection going into the barrel.:(

pick out the red sealant on the barrel, inside is a very small screw -

undo it and the bottom of the barrel comes out , with the wiring attached -

that the part you need to replace

Super,

Cheers Steptoe,
Through lurking I had got the impression that you were a GS Oracle!
- I'll put the drill and angle grinder down then! :D

no need to replace

unless the wires are all brittle and likely to snap off again. I took the bottom part of mine and re-soldered all the connections. It's not a difficult job as long as you've got the right tools and a bit of prior experience.

Just ensure you note what wire goes where and make sure to locate the connection block properly back into the barrel. DON'T LOOSE THE LITTLE SCREW!! I think a replacement loom is only about £30 if you need it.
