Hello. My left ignition coil burned out yesterday on a trip . I managed to get home , and I guess thats because it's s dual sparkplug-engine .
The engine did not run smooth , but it took me home .
Can the motor work on only the secondary sparkplug?
Is there any risk driving this way ?

The bike is a r1150gsa-04 twin spark

Yes it can run on the lower secondary plugs, as you found out by getting back home. If left for any length of time the main coil sticks will overheat and burn, when it happens it looks like expanding foam from an aerosol all over the rocker cover. And it usually melt the wiring to the coil stick. BMW sell a short section of repair loom specifically for damage caused by this happening.

Thats what happened. The wiring also got burnt. Why does the coil sticks overheat?
Is there any way to prevent this, or is it just what happens after time ? Dont know but I think this is the original main coil sticks that I have .

The main coil must have failed a while ago. They don’t burn out straight away, it takes quite a while before it gets to that stage
