Ignition failure:

Riding home from work in the rain on Tuesday and my bike coughed a couple of times then died. When the ignition is on it turns over on the starter, all the lights in the instrument cluster come on, fuel punp primes, but there doesn't appear to be a spark.

My first instinct is that the Hall effect doo dah has packed in, but any other suggestions will be gratefully received!

1. Where on my bike (1997 R1100GS) will I find the Hall effect thingie?

2. Can this be tested easily? if so how?

3. Would this be compatible with the item from a 1996 R1100RT? If so I could try swapping them over to see if that is what the problem is?

Thanks in advance for any help. I've been busy with work, family commitments and fitting a new bathroom since Tuesday so haven't had a good look yet.
