Ignition Switch Prob.

I have a problem with my ignition switch which I took to be the switch loom, but when the bottom of the switch is pushed up everything works, is it still liable to be the loom or does the switch contacts give problems as well?
Is their a way to test the switch, (i.e continuity between pins on the connector plug) other than plugging it back in?

hi there bob, seeing as no one else is ill try to offer some basic assistance.

Have you downloaded the free workshop manual? dont bother paying for one.
In there, there is some wiring diagrams i think and this should assist you in checking out the continuity of the switch.

Be a bit fiddly if its anything other than a broken down wire so if its the switch itself give me a shout, (if your pushing the bottom of the switch and all of a sudden everything works then it probably is)

i have half of a ignition wiring loom lying around in a garage drawer which has a working switch on it if you need it.

Thanks for the reply Paul, just found the problem. I removed the switch and loom earlier and just got around to looking at it. I split the outer sheaf from the connector down to the switch and all looked fine, I then removed the bottm of the switch to access the soldered connections and found that one wire had broken right through about 5mm back from the connection. A little soldering tomorrow should get it back working again.

cool, glad you found what should be the problem! Bung some silicon over the connections once you are done, should help prevent future problems by stopping the induvidual wires being pulled, instead they would act as a cluster.

1100 or 1150 Bob?

I remember Tuned having similar trouble with the ignition on his 1100 where he had to push up on the bottom of the switch to start the bike. If memory serves he had a broken wire too, so hopefully that is all it is and a bit of soldering will cure it for you.

2001 1150.
Bike has not been used for 3 weeks as I was rebuilding the brake calipers. Had booked it in for an MOT for tomorrow morning so last night I thought that I'd better check that it started okay which it did, but cut out when I moved the bars, so thats when I decided to remove the switch, lucky really, as it saved me from having a breakdown out on the road.

Check that the wiring loom isn't being pulled too tight when at full lock Bob. Gary reckoned that that was what had eventually led to his wires getting pulled at the bottom of the switch.

Thanks for all your replies.
You can see in the photo the bottom of the switch where the loom enters, this was the bit I removed to access the soldered connections where I found the broken wire, a bit of soldering and everythings working again, think I'll get a new switch though.
