Does anybody have any knowledge of fitting the Ilmberger hugger to a bike with ESA suspension? Apparently it fits but I'd like to know if there are any problems in removing the shroud on the ESA.

Unlike the normal type which is held with just a small nut and bolt the ESA shroud has three substantial bolts which go into the shock housing. I'm worried about removing these in case the whole thing falls to pieces:eek:

I'm considering just cutting a piece out of the bottom of the shroud!

Any thoughts

having just read these threads i've been out to the garage and guess what
yep...... the hugger has a hole in it where the shock shroud has been rubbing on it
and shock horror the rubber gromit has also fallen out of the hugger ahhhhhh so that the hugger now rubs up and down on the swing arm????? good design ??????
will have to load the bike with the panniers in the morning to see if the hugger also fouls the pannier frames????? at least its the weekend

and before some one says read the instructions when fitting
Ocean in plymouth fitted the hugger so you would think that they would no
to take the shock shroud off ????

I have now (after the horse has bolted and damage done) actually cut 2cm off the bottom of the shroud (after removing it of course) I am not sure if 2cm is adequate because it needs more scientific load testing.

However, my hugger is now off because I cannot stand the drone ! I am considering coating the inside of it with thick car underseal type stuff to minimize the resonance :nenau

Beautifully made otherwise :(

Found out the following information from ilmberger

In future we will offer two different huggers, and two different sets of clamps:

KHO.061.120GS.K Rear Hugger GSA and GS w/o Original Caseholder
KHO.063.120GS.K Rear Hugger GSA and GS w/o Original Caseholder with ESA
SKO.062.120GS.A Set (2) Clamps for Caseho.GS
SKO.063.12GSA.A Set (2) Clamps for Caseho.GS

KHO.061.120GS.K is the hugger like you have it.

KHO:063.120GS:K will be nearly the same, but it will be a little bit different in the front to have enough place for the ESA Suspension.

SKO.062.120GS.A is the clamp, like you had it for the normal luggage system (picture 193), we will offer a set of clamps (2 parts to be shure, to have enough place on every bike.)

SKO.063.12GSA.A is also a set of clamps for the Adventure Luggage System (picture 900). We checked everything yesterday and ordered now this new clamps, we will get this clamps in week 14. We recommend to use the hugger not with the Adventure luggage system, till we can offer the clamps for this system.

I must set the record straight. I abandoned my hugger after 2000 miles on a new GSA, because I could not stand the noise........ and it turns out that the noise is caused by a failed rear wheel bearing :eek

I will try again with the hugger later :bow

Ulmberger Hugger

I have posted a few threads on this site and having placed an order for a new 08 GS with most of the toys I will shortly feel that I can legitimately post threads. I therefore submit this with a degree of hesitation.

In the meanwhile, I had considered ordering a new Ulmberger Hugger for my new bike.

Then I read the horror stories of the problems when using one with ESA.

I asked CW who is supplying my bike and they advised that Ulmberger are revising the Hugger for the GS with ESA and intend to have a suitabke unit in July this year.

This appears to conflict with some of the other posts so you might wish to contact Ulmberger direct.
