Have just bought an Ilmberger hugger from motorworks- have got the instructions but they are all in German- have found the original fitting instructions and details in the Wunderlich catalogue, but it mentions that to fit this hugger with BMW luggage (mine is a GSA with Ali luggage) that you need a fitting kit so it doesnt foul the mounting brackets.

Just paid £230 for a hugger- have you seen the price of the fitting kit?? £40!!!! And that is just for two small pieces of CNC Aluminium and a couple of bolts.

Nowhere on Nippy's site or Motorworks does it mention the fitting kit being necessary, or even list it as a product. Does this mean I should have got it as part of the hugger mounting kit?

Is there any way round purchasing two tiny bits of aluminium for an exhorbitant price?

Am annoyed......

The fitting kit is basically two narrow clamps to replace the original ones if your bike bottoms out on the hugger, (and they're not cheap). It all depends on if you compress the bike too much such as off road, heavy rider, pillion with luggage etc. There are two types that depend on the luggage fitted and I would just keep an eye on it to see if they're touching as you may not need the fitting kit.
If you haven't already done it you need to remove the standard rear shock cover as this will rub on the hugger and shock.
Good luck:)

I also have the Ilmberger hugger. Fitting it to my GS was straight forward, can't recall any difficulties. However tha GSA might be different.
If you need to have something translated, let me know, I'll be happy to help you. :beerjug:

I fitted the Hornig hugger to my GSA a week ago. Hornig also warn you to buy a kit for the luggage side frame fixing bracket, which I duly ordered at 58 Euros. When I got it I thought the replacement clamps didn't look much smaller the than the originals, and on closer inspection the originals didn't look like they'd foul the hugger anyway. And you'd have to compress the suspension a helluva lot to bring the hugger level with the bracket.

So all in all I feel like I've been ripped off for no good reason. :blast

I have the Ilmberger hugger fitted om my GSA.

No problems loaded or otherwise so I would just fit it and keep an eye on anything rubbing ;)

Hi Guys,

Re; BMW R 1200 GS Adventure with DOHC engine, ESA, ABS - 2010 Model.

Recently received my Ilmberger carbon fibre hugger from Nigel at Sandbar Composites.
It looks lovely - excellent quality, classy and well designed but they are very expensive.

I'm no mechanical genius but I do have some basic mechanical knowledge, mainly routine maintenance etc.

I want to fit my hugger first thing tomorrow (Sunday 17th) and then ride up to the Bahnstormer Oktoberfest.

I have two fairly new torque wrenches which should cover my requirements.

Being fastidious, I like to do a job properly and just don't want to "bolt it on"!!

My tool kit isn't comprehensive but I'm sure I have the tools and ability to do this job.

The help and info I need is torque settings and tools needed.
I have found some info and please correct me if I'm wrong:-

Rear wheel bolts (5) to rear wheel carrier:-
Torque setting;60NM Torx size required??
.

ABS Sensor Cable Holder (needs to be re-routed upwards):-
Torque setting?? Torx size required??

Bevel Drive Bolts (3) which holds the hugger to the Bevel Drive:-
Torque setting;30NM Torx size required??

I have the recommended "Pannier Bracket / Clamp Kit":-
Torque setting??? Torx size required???

Any constructive help and advice is appreciated. :thumb2

Cheers,

RD.

When fitting the Ilmberger hugger, does the plastic spray guard thingy need to be removed or is it just a personal choice??

  • Plastic thingy required or not required??
  • Better with or without plastic thingy?

Thanks,

RD.
