Has anyone fitted an Ilmberger carbon fibre hugger on the back of their R1200GS? I've just bought one second-hand, and looking at where it mounts I think it is missing a sleeve for the front mounting. The two bolts that it mounts on move relative to each other, so I reckon it needs a sleeve or top-hat spacer in the front mount to allow rotation. Does anyone have any recollection of this from when they fitted theirs?

Cheers, Jon.

Just put one on an R1200 GS 10 - it had three holes and I did the following

Remove rear wheel

Undue three bolts which are part of the brake / hub assembly

Put hugger in place and bolt everything back up

Seemed like everyrhing was goint to be too cluse but I waswrong, It looks well.

You should be able to find the fitting instructions on the Wunderlich website

If you mean the spacer/bush that goes in the front mounting point thats lets the hugger rotate round that point as the suspension goes up and down, I have a spare in the garage somewhere.

Kenny, that is the very part. Is it just a little metal tube? Steel or Aluminium?
Cheers!

PS What's that bit pop-rivetted on the front of yours? Is that factory, or summat you dreamt up yourself? Did it work?

If it's like mine then it's a thin plastic mud flap that gets frayed at the end where it touches the tyre. I guess it helps a bit.
I believe it was a original part of the hugger.

Mine had a small brass metal bushing ring inside the front mounting hole but it kept falling out. Now held in place with a little loctite adhesive.

Its a brass or alloy bush that is slightly thicker than the hugger mounting plate.
The carbon flap is origional for the Mk1 long hugger, no longer made, keeps a bit extra crap off the bottom of the shock.

Fits all the 1200 gs/gsa up to but not including the 2010 model, which has a breather on the final drive that gets in the way.:blast

The one on ebay is the Mk2 hugger.

There was a Mk 1 long and a Mk 1 short which used two mounting points, the Mk2 came out which uses three mounting points on the final drive.
Then came the with ESA and without ESA versions, still using the three mounting points.
None of these will fit a 2010 model IF it has the final drive breather fitted, like mine.:comfort
They do make an updated hugger for the 2010 model though.:drool

hi

i wonder if it would be possible to modify the one on ebay to suit a 2010 model, being an engineer by trade i can get my hands on welders and cutting tools no problem, if it just means modifying the mounting plate to fit around the air vent

Martin (ninjabika) If its any help I had the hugger similar to that pictured in the 3rd post (without the pop riveted extra, so I guess it was the Mk2) which I fitted to my, now sold, 2010 GS (with ESA) without any contact issues and it was a straight forward fit.
