Ilmberger or Puig hugger?

Best thing is a mudsling.

I have a mudsling plus an Ilmberger carbon hugger (which I trimmed down by about an inch with my Dremel as it rubbed through on full suspension compression.)

Ilmberger or Puig hugger?

Neither. +1 for the Mudsling. Huggers rarely seem to fit well and they fracture eventually from what I've seen.

Had a Puig hugger on mine for a couple of years. Took it off earlier this year and TBH I can't see that it was achieving anything at all. The crud still seems to get deposited in exactly the same places, in the same quantities. The fasteners that came with the Puig are of inferior quality to the stuff BMW use (and they are hex socket heads, rather than Torx). To cap it all, one of the bolts sheared when I took it off (fortunately leaving sufficient stub remaining to get a grip with a set of Stilsons and remove it). The bare alloy of the Puig bracketry was also even more susceptible to corrosion than the painted BMW parts.

I'll certainly not be buying another one.

factually incorrect on both counts in my opinion. Ilimberger fit as though they were designed for the bike (which they are, obviously). The Ilimberger huggers fitted to my bikes have never fractured. I cannot comment on the Puig huggers as I have no experience of them. Mudsling are a good device, but your question was not about Mudsling, was it? You often find here that people answer the question they think you should have asked.

I have an ilmburger carbon one. Looks good, and protects the shock well.

Of the later one, there are two designs dependant upon what your bike is fitted with (iirc its about the ESA)

Problem with them is, I have found that the bolt that fixes the offside various pannier mount to the frame protrudes slightly and it catches on the ilmberger which has damaged the lacquer. Turning the bolt round seems to have sorted it though.

I have a mark 1 used ilmberger hugger avail, and also an unused power bronze one if anyone's interested. Pm me.

I did have a hugger but found it gave very little protection so took it off and fitted a Mudsling.

I believe a hugger that covered the whole wheel like the Britten-Norman racer could be effective but the short suff with a gap to the TUV guard just lets the crap suck into the low pressure area under the seat and all over rider's legs.

Here are my questions

Ilmberger hugger for my 2010 1200 GSA non ABS, non ESA. Original shock cover is still in place and would like to leave it there.

1. How does the hugger attach to the bike.
2. I have a mudsling already installed, will the Ilmberger fit with this in place.
3. Do I need to remove the standard shock cover to fit the Ilmberger.
4. Do I need to consider the aluminium luggage. I usually only use the top box but also have the side panniers and frame and have read that this can cause an issue with the Ilmberger hugger if the suspension is fully compressed.
5. I see there are quite a few versions KHO-071-120GS-K KHO-072-120GS-K KHO-073-120GS-K KHO-074-120GS-K KHO-075-120GS-K Which one do you think will fit my bike.
6. What is a case holder as referred to on their website

Thanks again

I wouldn't recommend fitting a hugger if you already have a mudsling, due to clearances issues.

Heres a pic of the Ilberger hugger on my old GSA.

It bolts to the rear of the final drive housing using 3 x bolts (you have to remove the rear wheel to fit it).

So...hugger or mudsling ? i would recommend the later.

In fairness my hugger was fitted with the TUV shovel, but looking at the above I recon my bike gets no more dirty with a Mudsling and no shovel than this hugger and no shovel.
