Advice required if poss please.

While I was in the French Alps the week before last I noticed some play in the rear wheel. With all the final drive issues I've kept an eye on this for years and so far there's been no discernable play.

By the time I returned home the play had developed to about 4mm so I whipped off the rear wheel and found that the play was in the splines between the aluminium wheel carrier flange and the outside of the tube that goes through the hub.

A search on here reveals that there were issues with these splines in the 04 models and that the cure is to replace the whole final drive assembly. I'm thinking that since the wear is obvious in the flange but not on the spindle I might get away with a new flange only.

Is there any experience among the GSer massive on this?

What year is the bike? If it has a full dealer service history there is a reasonable chance of a new FD as a goodwill gesture from BMW.

Nice idea Bear but it's a '54 model with >32k miles on the clock. I think that's stretching any goodwill even for BMW.

It's certainly worth a look to see if the axle splines look OK before you resort to a whole new FD (the 'tube that goes through the hub' is in fact the crownwheel so if that is knackered you are looking at a new/second hand FD). The ally carrier is anodised so the splines do have a hard surface but if that gets worn they will wear rapidly
