i have looked at pda route....too many extra bits required . i need gps that can be easily mounted on 1200gs, but can be easily transferred onto my small boat.
which unit is
a/ easy to use
b/marine/on land user friendly
c/easy to get downloads for europe wide travel

I understand Garmin Quest can also use the Bluechart software. They do say on Garmin site may have some limitations and best to contact them. I guess it depends on what detail you need for the boat.

The GPSmap 276C is ideal for your usage.
However the Quest will do the job and is cheaper (but with a smaller screen and less features).

The Quest is packaged with City Select Europe street mapping and car mounts and cables.

The GPSmap 276C has only a marine mount and power cable with bare wires.
You will need to cost in City Select Europe mapping and a 256MB Garmin data card.

You will also need a motorcycle mount (RAM?) for both.

For marine mapping you will need to add BlueChart Atlantic to both.
While City Select Europe includes street mapping for most of Western Europe, BlueChart Atlantic will allow you to unlock one region only. Sizing varies but may be as small as 200 miles of coastline.

who's doing all the deals on garmin kit then?? what does the Ram thing do? is it just a bracket or does it also power the unit?

The Garmin Quest kit includes a car mount kit and is supplied as a complete system.

To adapt and use on bikes, you'll need a suitable mount such as the Migsel 'speedo' bracket with a RAM ball base or you can venture towards RAM mounts (link at top of the page) for a RAM-B-149, RAM-B-149Z, RAM-B-149ZA or RAP-B-149 plus a cradle. The RAM-HOL-GA15 cradle holds the quest fine. I shall mention that as well that TT (Touratech) have a cradle which tou can hybrid to attach onto a RAM mount (as exmaple mentioned).

GPS Warehouse offer the Garmin Quest + RAM-B-149Z U-bolt mount + RAM-HOL-GA15 cradle as a bundle (www.gpsw.co.uk) for more details.

Lastly, if battery power for a while. Power cable for BMW GSers is being worked on . Yes, Garmin offer a bike mount kit with voltgae regulator in cradel casing and cable, but is it shipping ? Not in europe yet , maybe in USA (this date moves from Feb 11 now Feb 15, so it appears to be delayed as well. If you go down this route you'll still need to mount, so read RAM mount comments above, or use GA15 and wait for the GPSW Quest biker cable.
