Did some maintenance and checking for final drive today, lubed, checked the bearings etc and put the stuff back on, until... the final bolt - the left hand final drive housing's pivot bolt's thread ripped off if i tryed to tighten it to speciefied 150Nm... :(

So now i'm fuced, dunno where to get that thing... ? It's made of some titanium or so? Damn, why they write 150Nm if it can't resist it? Well, others did (paralever and right hand bolt), but this one didn't.

Dunno if BMW has them eighter? Too speciefic stuff... probably must order it and the stuff takes ALOOOT of time to get here in Estonia...

Aaaaah... it's gonna be weeks of no riding... :( :( :(

Gave it a though a bit... and i think it ripped thread off coz the contra nut is very thin, thus has very little thread space thus acts more force on the bolt thread - it has about few circles of thread itself - so preferably DON'T tighten it to 150Nm!!! Rather 100-120Nm or so... Just add fair amount of Loctite to keep it fixed.

Bummer.

I suggest you try Motorworks, Motobins or Sherlocks here in the Uk. I'm sure they'll ship overseas and should be able to help.

If we're talking about an 1100 and it's the locknut that's removed the thread then it's because it should be tightened to 105nm and not 150nm like the fixed pivot.

The fixed pivots [RHS] for both the swing arm and final drive should be 150nm
The pivots on the LHS should be 7nm with the locknuts at 105nm

Russ.

Motobins have been excellent for me. Always next day delivery if its a stock item.
If they wont ship abroad you can get it sent to me and i'll forward it on to you.

Hi Mo
The pin should be hand tight and locking pin 105nm.I locktited pin and let it harden then torqued nut as i don't have open wrench adaptor for torque wrench,so unable to hold pin with allan key.I think you will have to order from BMW dealer.Motorworks couldnt do me a swingarm pin.

Hi Mo,

bad luck. If it's part No 7 you're after (looks like it from your photo)...

...then it's part number is 00 00 0 311 074 .

Mike:)

Just an idea,

if its hard to get new part or it`ll take very long time, some handy turner could make spare part to get your bike again on the road.

Youp, it's nr. 7 and yep, it should be 105Nm not 150Nm, right hand is 150. I locktited the others.

An turner doing a new one may be an idea too... Gotta check it.

Cheers, Margus

I never locktite these bolts - and never had one come loose .

I'll go see the turner tomorrow, maybe can get a temporary replacement until the original part arrives from BMW.

Cheers, Margus :beerjug:

My 1100 had had the bolts replaced by the previous owner who hadn't used any Loctite. The outer bolt unwound about 6mm during a long run, making the handling interesting!
I would never replace them without Loctite,it's not worth the chance.

BMW evidently does not recommend locktighting these pins anymore due to the recognition that they often need adjustment, especially with a new taper bearing (the heaat necessary to get it out is unhealthy for the bearing). The # 7 pins are torqued to something like 5 or 7Nm if I remember correctly - they load the bearing ... my elbow t/wrench does this... must be nice and snug otherwise one gets the play and evntual squeek that many experience. The locking nuts get the big torque ... I once had an appy torque the pin to 105Nm and have always done them (and everything else) myself ever since.

Ordered the bolt, here maybe next week and let the turner make temporary one - can't live a week w/o bike you know :D

Original BMW bolt costs 7£. Dunno what part system you have there, but here it's 33 17 23 11 0 74

My ETK gives same part number for pin and all parts what i have ordered have matched to ETK. Also in my car.

Btw, heres something about ETK if it isn`t familiar. I`ve found it very handy and my version covers something like from fifties to 2002 models, bikes, cars and accesories. http://www.koalamotorsport.com/mall/etk.asp

Hahahahaaaa!

Got this bastard moving today!!! :D

Turner did me a new one, temporary, the BMW original comes in few weeks.

That's the baby siting inside -> left one, right one is BM shitty:

I hope you remembered to torque it to 150nm ;)

No shit, put the foucin' contra-nut to 80-90Nm and added shittless loads of Locktite (not to the funkin' pivot bolt!) :D
