I'm just registered... F800GS blown up!

I'm just about to take my F8GS to dealer as the head-gasket is now leaking oil down the left side of the engine. Nearly 13,000 mile's & counting! Second service is soon

Just had new pistons fitted, after having a rattle from the engine for about 5000 miles, that steadily got worse. Got to pay for the oil though!

Hi Martin,

Is it possible to explain what sort of rattle you had on the engine? Mine has around 13000 miles on and now when I start it, I have a weird tappy/rattling noise from the engine and the revs jumps up and down between 1k and 2k. It seems to have gotten worse recently. After a few minutes of idling, the engine and revs settles down, so it could be a temperature thing ? You experienced the same symptoms ?

I've asked the dealer about this at the 12k service and got a "possible noisy water pump" response, but I don't believe that for one second.

Thanks!

Piston Slap

I have searched this forum for a particular engine noise and it gets worse the colder it gets now. I have around 13000 miles on and just getting worse, so not a "break in" issue. I have found some more info over on F800riders, but not so much on this forum.

After reading about this, I think I may be suffering from piston slap on my F800GS engine. It is worse when you just start it. It is like a clapping/tapping sound from the engine block, the rev counter jumps quite a bit between 1k - 2k. After a few minutes of idling, the revs settles down and the noise becomes less noticeable, so I assume it is a temperature thing.

Also, when I then open the throttle slightly to just above 2k, the noise is more noticeable again. I am convinced this is piston slap and was wondering how many other F800GS riders out there have or had the same issue ?

I have read that some engines had to be rebuild, how long does that normally take? :nenau

well i get a slappy sound for about 2 seconds when starting from cold, i think thats normal....

Naahh, mine is not slappy and not for 2 seconds ... at least a few minutes and if I am on the bike I can feel those knocks through the pegs and it is getting worse as time goes by, think my engine is dying a slow death :(

Could also be small ends or valve gear - hows the oil pressure ?

I think that is all fine ... it's quite a bad noise actually. Definitely not normal. One guy at work used to be a car mechanic, he listened and was surprised how loud it is ... he even advises me not to ride the bike like that.

I am going down to Vines this Saturday for them to have a listen, apparently they replaced another F800 engine without even asking questions after listening to it for only 10sec.

Also, after reading various forums, even an engine rebuilt doesn't always fix it and for some even caused more problems and vibrations, maybe it's time to get the boxer, R1200GSA ? :augie

Hi Mongoose, I had this it started at about 2k quite a lout rattle on tickover which slowly got worse as the miles went on but it would not do it all the time, especially when the bmw tech was listening! When i had covered 7.5k it was very loud you could hear it when you were sitting at lights with ear plugs and music playing. Then the dealer heard it and had it in and fitted new barrels and pistons no quibbles they had it for about 10 days as I left it with them while away. Since then its sounds like a new bike which in a way I suppose it is partly. Hope this helps.

Hi Mongoose, sorry just seen this. I have just posted on the other thread and I think answered your question except I did not get any rev fluctuation though just this loud rattle/clank sound on tickover.

:(
Sounds like piston slap to me - reminds me of my old knackered 2 stroke days...

Reading this thread was getting me worried. til i heard the piston slap.....

Then reasuringly my bike does not sound like that.

I hope for all of those who are having hicups at the moment, get them smoothed out soon.

Morticia,(now riding her bike with fingers crossed).:augie

I am on my way to Vines tomorrow morning for them to listen, hopefully they will fix whatever is wrong, will keep you posted !

Hi Mongoose, That actually sounds different to "my" rattle, but it could still be pistons though. As you say see what your dealer says, they've got to fix it either way arnt you glad it's still it warranty, apparantly my repair would have cost about £1200!
Sorry I can't be more help.

Will be interested to find out what it is.
