Hi I'm new here... let's kick things off with a question :comfort

Can I ask for some advice...
I have just bought a K&N air filter recently and finally got around to fitting it. When I removed the intake pipe and oem filter I have discovered a pool of oil in the airbox. The filter is also soaking wet, however only on the bottom quarter of the filter. The top half is bone dry.

My bike... is a 2014 G650GS ex bmw off road bike which means I'm left wondering if the problem is 1 of 2 things..

Any thoughts or experience is much appreciated.

Would you be inclined to agree or side with either of the following?...

1. The engine could be blowing oil back past the piston rings and collecting in the airbox. Meaning it's a bit fubar and requires rebuilding.

Or

2. The bike was dropped and left on it side pumping oil back through the breather and leaving a pool which has sat there. (The fact the filter is dry on top and damp at the bottom is why I am wondering this. Ie a historic incident and it's been sat there for a while?)

What are people's thoughts?

This is my first venture into motorcycle ownership... I'm on a steep learning curve...

Welcome to all things UKGSer Sebspring :thumby:

Don't worry about it ... could've built up over the years. Is it running OK?

Clean it out and ride it ... then see if it builds back up again.

Those engines are fairly bullet proof ;)

If it's an ex-off road use bike the chances are it's been gradually building up as the bike was dropped over and over. Clean it, run it, check it in a few weeks (if it's running ok), you're good!

I've done what you said. And I'll check again in 250 / 500 miles time. See if there is any new oil

It's in warranty so I'm not stressed about it.

The bike was cheap for a reason being from the BMW ORS. So I knew owning it wouldn't be without getting my hands dirty now and again!

Enjoying GS ownership so far ...

Thanks for the replies

It is easy to overfill these bikes, and the surplus gets blown into the filter. On my GS there was a drain for the airbox, a rubber tube which ended with a removable plug just above the spark plug, so easy to check if it is still happening.

The drain pipe can be seen in the bottom right of the pic. But because it's sat above the bottom of the box... it doesn't drain anything until it has quite a quantity of oil already in there!
