Just back from a 3250 mile trip to N Italy (FIM Mototour of nations .... another story)
On a 2009 1200 RT. Have had the bike approx a year now , and have always got very good fuel consumption figs (real figs .... the computer typically reads about 1 mpg high per tankful) Low of 55 , high of 61.2 .. average 58.5 before trip

On the trip .. 2 up and fairly fully loaded..... (gave it quite a few fills of 98 octane ... since it was there , and what it really should have) it averaged almost 62 mpg , with a high of over 71 (range at one point was showing 470 miles) ... it goes really well (read fast) , so I came to conclusion it must be modified / chipped.

Wrote to previous owner when we got back , and got a reply last night saying no .. it's bog std.
Anyone else "suffering" from this ?
The only thing I can put it down to is miles ... bike now has approx 68,000. No oil used on trip either
hmm.........................

If I put super in my RT and then go for a "normal" (IE not riding like a loon) ride I get an extra 8 or 9 mpg (up to aprox 60mpg).On normal day to day riding using super it gives an extra 4 to 5mpg compared to normal unleaded.

I heard similar from a mate with his bike, higher octane petrol gave him better MPG, at least thats what he thought.

Yes ... I can see the logic in that (More Hp produced , therefore slightly smaller throttle openings to give same performance .... etc)

My main question was more related to the actual mpg figure (seems way above "normal") , and it's potential relationship to miles travelled (ie , how loose is the engine ??)

cheers

You have to remember that when you are doing short journeys, that is the time the engine uses most fuel - when its warming up with the choke on (so to speak).
When you are touring you do longer rides with the engine hot and working at its best range.

Oh dear ... I'll try again

Does anyone else have R1200rt's that when in "normal use" average approx 58 / 59 mpg ?

(and if so , how many miles are on your bike ?) :beerjug:

Mine averaged around 54mpg on my 2300 miles tour of northern Spain, but a lot of that was on twisty roads.

The RT I hired in the States last year averaged 59mpg, but most of that was wide open roads at a steady 75mph.

Both bikes were two-up and heavily loaded.

Mine does 58-59 in normal use. Always shell v-power or Esso super ul. '05 plate rt, 9000 miles, still feels like it is loosening up.
Pottering about in north wales got the same sort of range figures but it soon goes down when pushing on a bit or with the screen up. Anything over 60 mph seems to knock the mpg.

My RT is 13 plate, collected May this year.

Now at 7500 miles. Try to use Shell Nitro.

Normal day round trip approx. 200 miles (100 miles in one hop).

Mix of roads A and B, not much dual carriageway, even less motorway, speed 65-70 mostly, not full acceleration from r/abouts, junctions, just enough to get ahead of the traffic.....60.1 mpg shows up.

Bike fully loaded with camping gear at all times I got the following figures

Bore you with last yrs Alps trip. mpg in bold

Totals 2837.3 miles on 193.5Litres = 66.6 mpg

To bore you even further
This year toured in Norway. Half mileage on fast Autobahns of the Nederlands, Germany and Denmark.

3323 miles 223.6Litres 67.5mpg

Bike now at 58 000miles

TBH I feel cheated now if I get less than 60mpg.

Even in Scotland mixture of winding A/B/C/single tracks and boring A9 with lots of overtakes and then cruising at 60.

Near Edinburgh to John O'Groats via Glen Coe and Durness then back home on A9

660miles 49litres 60.3mpg

Makes for a superb range for doing Nordkapp and long distances without needing to stop too often.
e.g. Rotterdam to Hirtshals one day 625miles 10hrs one stop for fuel. Two stops for easing backside and fluids in/out.

Ya cannae wack an RT for mileage!

:bow

ps ALWAYS try to get the high octane stuff whenever I can.
It runs so much better.
I think it's worth the wee bit extra on the standard stuff.
Considering the cost of servicing it's a very small percentage extra.

... wayyyyyyy tooooo much information , but glad to know mine is now "normal" !!

I get nothing like that!

2013 1200RT riding around southern England commuting - mixture of m-way, a roads and towns and i get an average of 50mpg. run it on bog standard unleaded.
You must all have excellent throttle control and riding technique!

P

Put up the 'detail' to show that it is pretty consistent.

Back from Weekend on Lakes. Camping in Langdale pikes.

Down and back on a tank. 332.5miles, 24litres and thats 62.9mpg.
Mixture of A7, some M6 a lot of wiggly roads up and down dale. :nenau

ps Pal with Dominator 600? He's about 55mpg. Probably working his engine pretty hard to keep up.

A visit here was very good:

That's ridiculous. I've owned 2 12 RT's, an 05 & a TC and got 54.4 consistently out of both of them, 1 up, regardless of roads used.
I only once saw 60 MPG and that was when I did 50 MPH for 15 steady miles on a straight French RN.

In fact I'm convinced you've got yours set to KPG.

Checked mine today after a 180 mile trip over the Black Mountains 60.4 MPG:D. [Bikes computer figures]
2007 RT. It has always returned high 50,s even when making progress;)

Are you guys just going off the computer for your mpg, or are you actually working it out? I haven't got a RT yet but looking to buy at the moment. With my cars and other bike I use fuelly.com to keep a track of mpg, and always find it different to what the car clock says (Audi A4)

Read my first post again .... slowly !!

Read my first post again .... slowly !!

I did read your post, hence why I said 'guys' rather that 'Cortina'
I did read you had used a computer, but wondered if others where doing the same or if they where using the on board computer.

Computer??? What's that, mine is a basic 2005RT.

What I do is the old fashion method of:

Fill up the tank - slowly until I can't get much more in.
Reset the trip to zero.
Ride for about 280+ miles.

Repeat above steps.

So each fill up is based on number of miles covered on the trip
divided by the fuel put in at the pump. (x 4.54 for mpg conversion)

So unless my trip meter overeads big time and/or the pumps are widely inaccurate (!) then my
mpg figures stand.

That's why I quoted all those figures for that trip.
The RT is a consistent performer. Day in day out.
And as I said I feel cheated if I dip below 60mpg!

Hate to say but I've got every trip logged on a spreadsheet for all my vehicles.

Sad but true.
