Im not Leaning anymore !

Snoops, when you're in a hole stop f ucking digging..
It just pisses people off
I understand how it works, so do Land Rover who have developed a V8 diesel that is capable of 40 mpg, all done by fuel management it may use slightly more fuel at certain revs but it develops more power and therefor pulls a higher gear more effeciently at lower revs = better fuel economy
You just keep to Exploring :thumb2 as we all know your an expert at that !!:augie

**** off Proff my argument has been backed up by wiki. :rob

And we aren't talking about different engine sizes, go find your spectacles.

Is that really the level of your understanding or are you trying to take the piss....?

Start here.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoichiometric_air_ratio

However, keep in mind that at certain parts of the fuel map, a GS is already running significantly leaner than stoich. When you then remove the catalytic convertor and possibly change the end can and the air filter for a "performance" one you both decrease the exhaust back pressure and lower any intake restriction. Both of these make the mixture leaner still - way past the point of increasing efficiency so that you have to use larger throttle openings and use more fuel than you would if you were running a richer and more efficient fuel map.

So in this case, more is actually less.....:comfort

is there a possibility that fitting the power commander upsets the ECUs fuel consumption computations? :nenau

Dunno about the GS but when I had my truck "chipped" the BHP went from 175 to 199 but the fuel consumption went down from an average of 28mpg to over 32 and on some runs I saw in excess of 42mpg....
this was backed up by good old milage vs amount of fuel used which I'm sure the PC wont affect....;)
it goes back to what the others were saying, that an engine running correctly will acheive the same power sooner (ie vs time on a graph) which means less throttle so less fuel used overall...

Thats what it does It just makes the ECU think

X Y or Z then the ECU adjusts it's parameters

Bingo you have power increase

Re Map is theeeeeee Way to go !!!!!

It's relevant to your bike only! As data has been
logged from dyno runs it's only relevant to that
Bike

Had my GSA on the Dyno this morning for a custom fuel map after fitting the power commander at the weekend. The first run confirmed that the fueling was way to weak right across the rev range producing 102.83 Bhp and 78.79ft lbs of Torque. There after Tim Blakemore set about creating a custom fuel map after and hour and a half the GS was wheeled out now producing 108 Bhp and 83 66.ft lbs of Torque. Riding the GS home it was immediately apparant that the idle, low speed jerkyness was gone replaced by a silky smooth flexible engine with much more responce to the throttle . I checked the fuel computer on the way down with an average of 46.7, on the return journy it was 53.2 ! A good improvement over the standard set up and peace of mind knowing that the fueling is spot on

2 questions mate...

1. Will the bike still pass emissions testing (I doubt it) or do you have to disconnect the Power Commander?

2. Will the mod knacker the Cat?

Cheers,

If the science of an enriched mixture improving MPG doesn't sink in then consider this.

On Top Gear 2 seasons ago, Clarkson chased the Stig in a BMW M3. The Stig was driving a Toyota Prius. Clarkson got 50% more MPG out of the M3 then The Stig got out of the Prius. This was because the more pwerful engine was wasting less fuel. Its as much about wasted fuel as it is using fuel.

Cheers,

1, no emission checks on bike mot
2, read the thread, it says the cat was removed.

Sorry, I’d didn’t make that clear enough…

2, would it knacker MY CAT

It's not so much a question of whether or not it would knacker your cat', although it would. If you don't remove the cat' there would be little point in fitting a Power Commander, although ISTR that there is a standard map that you can fit to a standard bike. However, I don't know if this would really make much difference to the way the bike rides.

In order to use the Power Commander and a custom map to its best advantage, you need to remove the Lambda sensors otherwise when the bike's running in closed-loop mode, they will attempt to override the values in the custom map.

However, it's worth noting that an option on the new Power Commander V is a pair of wideband Lambda sensors, known as Auto Tune, which map the fuelling in real time as you're riding. In theory, this should allow you to make pretty much any modification to the intake and / or exhaust system and the Power Commander will fuel the engine optimally.

Cheers Schtum, I’m not interested in more power, all I want is a bike that runs better, smoother, with the standard exhaust, likes bikes use to do :D

Thanks, martin

The custom map was £150 got the power commander from the states for £180 saved a bit there think they are £278 ish here

Got a link for the power commander supplier in the States? I.m going to fit a PC to my bike and invest in an hour or 2 on the dyno ;)

Try mdracingstp.com they are 266 us dollers at the moment depends on the exchange rate had my sister bring mine over so saved on postage still works out cheaper than here tho, supplied fitted and a custom map by tim blakemore racing in Bristol is £400 quite expensive but makes a great bike brilliant !

Not quite the full story fella, the Top Gear episode has little to do with tuning a boxer twin engine:

The Prius was running as fast as it could, its small petrol engine working at high rpm at a less efficient part of its rev range. The M3 was just keeping up at part throttle, the part of its rev range where it is more fuel efficient.

The whole exercise was set up to give a prejudiced view of 'envirocars' like the Prius by playing the cars against each other in an unrealistic test. The truth is that in real-world motoring eg the daily urban cycle, the Prius could have achieved fuel efficiencies far in excess of the M3.

(I dont work for BWM or Toyota and don't own one BTW.)

I can also recommend Tim Blackmore’s skills as a Dyno tuner. He is also a professional ‘Top Fuel:augie’ Drag Racer, and he has tuned a few of my previous bikes, e.g. ZX-12R and ZX-10R’s.

Fitting a PC and getting it mapped is the next thing on the agenda for my GSA.

My 3rd ZX12R had a full race Akrapovic system, K&N filter and powercommander. WOOOW
It made the standard bike feel like a Blackbird and it did not effect fuel economy.
