I'm sad...low speed off on my 05 R1150GSA SE...help me fix her please

So unfortunately I have had a low speed off on my way to work tonight.

I am ok and injury free after a few sausage rolls along the road.

Came off at about 20-25mph on a greasy roundabout. The bike has slid and then done the usual pirouette on the crash bars. As a result the handlebars and LHS crash bars have bent, both plastic cylinder head guards and the spark plug covers have snapped/smashed.

After riding home with my tail between my legs I am pleased to say there is no further damage.

I have the bike in the garage and have given it a good walk around. Thankfully all of the guards have done there bit and saved any major damage.

The RHS cylinder head has some grazing and has worn the paint off but thankfully isn't cracked.


Can anyone one tell me the best place to get replacement handlebars, preferably OEM but wouldn't mind Renthals as long as they aren't a hassle to replace.

Can you still get the OEM crash bars or is there a better after market alternative?

Can someone point me in the direction of some aluminium head guards, not at the tourateat prices though?
 
I'm afraid there is no such thing as bargain basement when it comes to price expectations when an old bike worth x amount has a few knocks after a fall.
Especially when replacing consumer items as you have said are damaged.
I have a set of Steptoe's fabled H/D alumunium cast head guards which seemed at the time to cost me a lot, but every time I fall off I just have a little rub with a file, get the rattle can out and it looks as good a s new in 5 mins. 5 times I've been off in the ice and repaired now in the last 7 winters and still look like new.
The only other stuff I've damaged has been rear indicator stalks which I must say the gaffer tape has held up very well from @ 2010...
 
Bad luck mate, so easy to do.

Best place for cheap bars is Motorworks. They do used ones for sixty quid. Give them a ring in the morning and ask what they've got in stock. They might also have crash bars.
 
Did the same myself earlier this year dropped my 1200GSA on a French roundabout in torrential rain, bike slid across the road and bounced up the pavement fortunately on its side. was so gutted!!
I had fitted some Heed crash bars a few weeks before after another very slow off (bit of a regular occurrence) that destroyed the alu head protector, at the time I felt that the heads needed proper protection.

Anyhoo although the heed bars were totalled they saved the bike from major damage the only BMW part I needed to get was the lower LHS crash bar which got bent (from ebay) and replacement heed crash bars.

Feel your pain though, think you will get most replacement parts off ebay and Motorworks.

Has taken quite a while to get my confidence back especially in the wet.
 
Glad you are ok . If it makes you feel better I asked about some GSA WC bars to fit to my new scrambler . £290 :eek:. You'll be able to patch your SE for about that ! :thumby:
 
I also bent my handlebars badly some time ago. My garage managed to find a not-too-expensive Touratech aluminium one. I went for the upgrade, and I could not be more pleased. It is prepared for OEM heated grips (though I don't have them). The riding position greatly improved, seem more robust, and way better looking. If you could fine one, I would really recommend this way.

To compensate the cost of the repair (included all instruments and other bits too...), I left the scratches in the tank and cylinder heads as a reminder that I should keep an eye on the road, no matter how beautiful the landscape is! (I was a bit distracted, and off the road I went)

When I read things like this reminds me of the British show Keeping up Appearances, when Mrs Bucket says 'my sister the one with the big house, the Mercedes Benz and the pony'

Its not just a GS but a GSA SE, just makes me lough thinking about it.

Glad you are alright though, and hope you can fix your bike real soon.
 
At least you're in one piece and older and wiser. Look on the bright side, you've got an appreciating asset there so worth a couple of bob to fix up. :beerjug:
 
Can someone enlighten me to the thread size for the brake fittings? Performing the servoectomy and am making up the joint link for the front pipework.

Handle barsvarrived today from MikeyBoy.

Already rubbed down and sprayed with Hammeritr Smooth Black.

Made a new wiring harness for the heated grips as I snapped the lhs when removing it.

Currently making use of the living room light fitting to dry off the handlebars before fitting. The wife isn't impressed.

 
So had a busy day on Friday. My new HEED full bunker crash bars arrived on Thursday. I spent a couple of hours on Friday fitting them, along with the touratech brake pedal enlarger.

I have to say i am very impressed with the quality of the Heed crash bars. They fit very well and required no fiddling to get anything to align. They don't get in the way for oil filter replacements etc as they mount to the underside of the Engine/gearbox assembly.

Now just waiting on the aluminium head covers from DS Bike Protection. They should be here Monday. I also have the rugged roads Hella Micro DE guards to fit, then replace the halogens with 35W HID's. Currently fabricating a mounting bracket at work for the ballasts.
 
Also found out on the way to work tonight that the LHS heated grip isn't working. I am going to disconnect it and solder the connections as i crimped them due for speed. In hindsight I should have done them properly first time.
