I used Bitdefender Virus Scanner as suggested by Apple support - I had a similar issue and it was infuriating. Cleared out all of the malware. Free in the app store

How does a 'virus scanner' stop the spam emails the OP is talking about? Or am I misunderstanding what Bitdefender Virus Scanner does?

Did exactly yhe same thing over in Florida... Unsubscribed but yet to get bombarded ( another Mac ) so watching with interest.

Same on my Galaxy (android) since I did a competition on MCN bastids

Thanks for the suggestion here, I have a 2009 MacBook which has been OK but not as fast as normal lately, and a bit glitchy. I downloaded and installed bit defender, did a deep scan. It found about 15 malware and adware programmes and a couple of trojans (whatever they are!), anyway, upshot is the MacBook is now back up and running at lightning speed, I honestly can't remember it being this quick since we bought it!!! I'm always sceptical when I do virus scans as I believe the programme will add some to the list (well, you wouldn't want to pay for a system, install it only for it to find nothing now would you!?) but this is free?!?!?

Highly recommended.

Thanks again.

I use the Sophos Anti-Virus software which is also free on my Macbook Pro. Very regular updates to their database too.

Can I recommend it? Well, it seems to do what it should, but as you cannot actually run one virus scanner in parallel to another (I assume) it is difficult to say if anything else would be better. But Sophos does seem to 'do what it says on the can"

I use Avast for Mac and it seem pretty good
updates almost daily i run it about every 2 weeks just to be safe

Hi

Have you checked Safari - Preferences - Notifications &/0r Extensions.

If you are receiving notifications then this is probably where they are getting permissions

It sounds as though you are referring to email. Gmail has an excellent spam blocking system and you can use it to filter mail from any mail account - doesn't need to be a gmail address but you do need a gmail account to make it work.

gmail does a good job of filtering email. if that's not enough, it can be tweaked to exclude more mail. if that's not enough, create some Rules in Mail app.

If you'r using 10.8 then open Mail

Highlight the offending email (in the left hand pane) the senders email address will have a little down arrow to the right of it, select copy.

Go to the menu bar and select Preferences

<a href="http://s895.photobucket.com/user/squigles_photos/media/Mac/Rules.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac160/squigles_photos/Mac/Rules.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Rules.jpg"/></a>

Highlight Junk Mail (or make a new rule called Junk Mail) then Edit Rule

<a href="http://s895.photobucket.com/user/squigles_photos/media/Mac/Mail.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac160/squigles_photos/Mac/Mail.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Mail.jpg"/></a>

Now add the rule and paste the senders email address into the right hand text entry box :-)

I find it best to delete anything before the @

Hope this helps :-)
