www.paypal.com won't load on either my iMac or Macbook Pro.

I've tried both Safari and Firefox on both machines and none of them work. Software update says everything is up to date on both machines.

I've cleared the cache, deleted all the cookies, reset Safari and rebooted many times.

Internet is fine for all the other sites I've tried.

The PayPal site isn't down because I can get to it with my (Windows XP) PC using IE. The PC is on the same network so it kind of rules out the network connection.

It's been been like this for days and I'm running out of ideas to try.

I'm sure this stuff is just supposed to work . . .:augie

What would you try next ?

Firstly: has it ever worked on your Mac?
Secondly: paypal.com redirects to https://www.paypal.com,
so do other https: pages work on your mac?
i.e. https://www.nwolb.com (Nat West online banking)
if not it could just be browser settings.
(I recall that some old versions of Internet Explorer won't work with banking
as their encryption levels are not high enough. )
That shouldn't be the case here though.
Thirdly: how does the problem manifest itself,
does nothing? hangs the browser? etc...

just tried it on my Macbook Pro and it worked fine. I suspect that it is a permission/certificate issue and not an apple issue.

Just did a quick search on Google for problems accessing Paypal on a mac and it came up with quite a few hits so you are not alone!! (if that helps!)

Thanks for the suggestions Mike.

To answer your points.
Yes has worked fine in the past but it's a been a while since I've used it.

Other https pages work fine.

It doesn't hang the browser but the paypal page only partially loads and nothing at all is displayed - just a blank white page.
Looking at the activity window it stops loading at this point:

Thanks Chris.
Nice to know it should all work but really odd that both my machines show exactly the same symptoms.

I've been searching Google and the Apple support forums for days.
Although I can find lots of hits most of them are very old. But yes, there is a bit of a history of PayPal and Safari/Apple problems. I've tried everything I've found so far that seemed relevant but still no luck.

Anything specific your searches have turned up ?

Paul

Don't know if you've solved it in the meantime, but this is one of the fixes posted:

I ran Disk Utility on my Mac and repaired permissions, which turned up several permissions errors related to Airport Utility. I also ran "Verify Disk" and it told me the boot disk needed repairing, which I did. I then repaired permissions again and now, unexplainably, I can access PayPal, from all computers.

Another:

You need to call or email your ISP (Internet Service Provider) the people you purchase your Internet access through and ask them what their DNS (Domain Name Server) address is and then once you find it out, you then go to System Preferences -> Network -> Click on the Interface you are using, Airport / Ethernet, etc then click on "TCP/IP" and stick it in the "Search Domain" text field and the DNS Servers address field.

Don't know if that helps, but hey! most seem to be router, timing out, permissions comments. Also cookies being set to "never ask".
