Getting used to my new iMac, I have a few question for those experianced Mac owners, if you don't mind answerring.

With my old PC, I used Mail Washer Pro, to preview my incomming mail, is there an eqiverllant for the Mac?

As it appears Mac owner feel they dont require anti virus software, do you still scan for Mailware and if so what do you recomend.

Any recomendations on applications to keep my mac secure greatly apreciated.

Cheers :thumb2

most of my mail goes via gmail who do a pretty good job of filtering. i then run a handful of custom rules in Mac Mail to sort the last few out.

a rule to filter out anything that is not addressed to me seems very effective. what i don't understand is why i would get mail with the wrong address in the first place?

i have used Clam-x virus scanner once or twice in several years, but either it's not much cop or they just don't update it much. maybe they don't need to? not bothered for ages.

I've been using an iMac since last April and haven't used any security software without any problems (touch wood).

One thing you will notice is that although the UI is nicer to look at, in many ways it's not as good an interface as Windows. But you'll get used to doing things Mr Jobs ways.

i didn't notice.

I use "Spam Seive" to filter out all my junk mail and spam -works very well, and kind of learns over a period of time which is good and bad mail -you can use ceertain key words as well. After having used for a month or so, it will become very accurate, with only a few mistakes.

Available here ;

Works away quietly in the background -excellent software iMHO !

I don't bother with any anti virus ...just don't click on any dodgy email attachments. Most are designed for Windoze anyhow.

Have had and used Macs for years without ever having cause to resort to any anti-malware product......

I've been using a Macbook Pro (now Unibody) since they came out, and I've not had a problem with viruses.

I use ClamXav for virus scanning, but only have it monitor my download directory, I host my mail on gmail (both @gmail.com and my private domains), and they are pretty good at filtering out spam (unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world, so once in a while I get some spam into my inbox).

There are viruses which runs on OSX, but they are more concept that anything else - most of the time you'll get them by installing a program which isn't original (illegal downloads), where the nice person who share them have added some code to the installer which then adds nasty stuff (yet another good idea to use original software) - the first iLife '09 which where leaked had things added to them.

I can only recommend to enable the firewall, and do not install anything which you do not know the origin of.

Thanks for all your suggestions. :thumb2 I was surprised to find the firewall wasn't set as default. On now though.
