Right then ....... I don't consider myself a computer numpty but neither am I super educated on the subject either.

I have a 2006 Dual core 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.

She fires up, I get the usual chime and the Apple logo with the spinning disc under it for about 20 seconds then nothing, just a white screen.

I have tried the following ...

1. Booting in safe mode. I get the status bar gradually completing below the Apple logo. when it's complete the screen just turns white ......

2. Boot from the original install disk. This crashes the computer and I get the box in many languages asking me to restart the computer

3. Reset the PRAM. No effect.

4. Ran an fsck -y check in Single user mode. I get the ......System was modified....... message so run it again until I get the "Macintosh HD appears to be ok" message. type 'reboot' in the command prompt. up she comes back to the same white screen.

5. Apple hardware test from the original install CD. I perform the extended test but after 12 minutes it tells me 'No trouble found'

6. Removed the 3rd party RAM. This has no effect. Same white screen.

Now I know there are some far more advanced Mac users than me on here ................ Any ideas you clever lot?

I'd hate to have to take it somewhere for them to run some quick fix and charge me £150!!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

24" macs have a been known to have hard drives fail.

It could also be full, a problem I had with a mac mini.

I found a power down, remove every peripheral, and completely remove the power source for about 10 seconds or so, and then power up.

Cheers for the reply. It's not connected to any peripheral device and has been unplugged from the mains for hours on end. I would use Target disk mode but I don't have another Mac with a firewire port nor do I have the cable. ..................

Come on you Mac guru's ........... let's be having you!

Hi I had a similar problem on my IMAC running lion, at first I thought it was my hard drive however I could still boot it up on the bootcamp partition running windows. So it was a quick call to apple support they charge £30 if you are outside the cover period& basically it was a corrupted operating system, so we re installed lion & since then it has worked like a dream. To do this you needed to hold down a sequence of keys at startup then it gives you the option of reinstalling the operating system.

It won't boot from any disc unfortunately!

Maybe I'll I'll give Apple a call and see if they can help me out.

.................. I was kind of hoping some of the more techy types might have some words of wisdom .... :nenau

If it won't boot from an os-x install disc, it rather suggests some awkward hardware issue, but not the hdd.

You've checked the RAM, and I'm at something of a loss what to suggest, apart from posting on the apple discussion boards.

I've read every post on every forum I can find. Each one concludes that it needs to go back to Apple. I was really hoping not to have the agro but it looks like that might be my only option. :(

I'm thinking the same ........... I've got to be honest that if the repair is going to be £250 - £300 I might very well just buy a new one!

that's the spirit! :)

can't imagine any repair under that sort of figure at the apple store. logic board is likely double.

or more :eek

might as well take it in for a diagnosis though.

on the plus side, you should get a few quid for your old one on ebay as spares. check out the completed listings.

SWIMBO is in the States for work this week ........ maybe I'll look into how much I could save on a new jobbie! :green gri

If you have any students under your roof, check out the educational discount section of Apples website. My MacBook Pro Quad i7 was a lot cheaper thanks to my missus needing it for her studies as a mature student.

To completely discharge the machine, shut it down. Remove the power cord and press the on button for 10 seconds. Clears the capacitors down fully. Then restart.

I have no idea what it's worth. :nenau

It's immaculate with original box and discs etc etc
