A couple years ago, someone was selling (I believe it might have been the infamous Dutchman??) a holder for the Streetpilot GPS's... It was milled out of aluminium I think. (it surrounded the GPS and attached to a Ram Mount)

I never saved the pictures, but I'd like to have a go at repeating it with some forming and welding...

Anyone have some images of that thing handy to refresh my memory... (location of the antenna hole, etc...)

Hope this helps, I have a very dark tinted windscreen so "full frontals" wouldn't show detail. I installed the screen to shade the display from the sun....OOPS..but on reading your post again, this isn't the one you're looking for...sorry

Ahh.... thanks for that, but that is not what I'm after.

What I am after is a 'box' that is machined out of a single billet of alu (I think), and that the 2610/2820 fits inside... this then mounts to whatever.

What I'd like to do is arrange it so that my GPS is not easily stolen, so I can just leave it on for a trip into the store and such... Locking it into a solid looking box would achieve this (with work on making the Ram mount less easy to undo... replacing the knob with a set-screw perhaps...)

The touratech bent chocolate aluminium mount frame (with lock) are also not what I have in mind.

I believe this thing was on the Motorrad concepts website 2 or 3 years ago... but I may be mistaken.

I can now weld aluminium, so figure I can bodge something up without a milling machine.

Thanks for taking the effort to post those though...

Over here their is the "Gadget Guy" http://www.gadgetguy.net/ maybe he makes the GPS housing you are looking for?

Saw one at a rally once. Held this work of art in my hand. Very well made and very expensive.

Should be many pictures on the website.

I'm not being funny... but though your idea is all very well in theory - I would still be concerned that some idiot would 'have a go' and though they might not get the GPS off the bike - would still cause damage. Maybe more damage than the GPS is itself worth.

The idea.. and that picture above - is very neat though. :thumb2

Agree with Motobiker about the "safety" factor. To be honest I can see how twist and pull that whole mounting out of the plastic clock surround unless you fit it onto the metal bar that goes around the cockpit.

The best solution is still I think a ram mount which you can undo in seconds taking the whole unit with you.

Having said all of above :D:D my father in law travelled through the whole of Africa, Spain, France and the UK last year only locking his GPS Zumo with the little screw on the OEM bracket. He never took it off once and was of the view that it is insured should some scrote decide to nick it.

Here is my GPS setup on the HP2.....

The start looking at the bike without the screen...

A bit of grinding....

A touch of welding

Mock fitting and checking for any additional changes

We decided this will be the base for the screen fittings and the GPS bracket

Fitting some "wings" for the screen

Chad has done a fair bit of fabricating before and the man has a tool for every job and type of material. Cleaning up the alu bracket for the GPS with some alu cleaning brushing thingie tool :D

When in doubt grab a bigger hammer and hit it

The poor vice took a beating yesterday

GPS Bracket fitting on the crossbar

hp2_mods10.jpg

It took a bit of bending and moving around to get the right clearances between the clocks and the screen

hp2_mods11.jpg

GPS will go here

With the screen in place and fitted

hp2_mods13.jpg

The gap between the fairing and headlight is being blocked with another alu cut out which I need to fit and secure on the fly screen.

hp2_mods14.jpg

At least now the fly screen is more secure and less wobbly and the GPS in sight out of the way from the other controls.

All done with a great helping hand from my mate Chad :thumb2

Might not be what you are after but suppose the more idea's the better :beerjug:

Not all the mounts from the Gadget Guy mount to the plastic parts of the bike. Guess I chose the wrong picture to post.

The 1200GS mount is way over kill but looks very stout.

For some of the othe BMW's the mounts are mounted to the hard points on the bike.

Me, I just made my own.

All made from aluminum .050 2024 T3. Super strong and light right down to the radar detector mount.

Thanks for posting those.

It was the gadget guy holder that I was thinking of... I'm going to try to form and weld, rather than CNC out of a billet. We'll see how it goes.
