I am looking at an 1150 imported from Japan with full U.K. registration. What are the implications of buying an imported bike? Any experiences out there? Would you buy one? I know insurance companies ask whether a bike is imported or not, and some dealers will not accept imported bikes as PX, etc. But what additional costs are incurred or what risks are involved? Thanks for advice. Cheers

I sorry to sound stupid but can you just say that again...?

your looking to import a bike or is the bike already here...? ad you wanna buy that...?

If it's got a full registration for the UK what's the problem...? it'll have a certificate of conformaty an MOT and whatever tax was or may have been due would have been paid. In Japan they drive on the same side as here, the clocks will be in KM's so a sticker will solve that problem... to get the MOT, the headlight will be fine, indicators will be yellow.... afterall Japan is a civilised country, they don't cause much harm (anymore)

Why would you be partexing a bike you've just bought...? sell it privately...? solves that I guess... or the dealer will make an offer, so they don't loose out if your part exing it?!? As far as I know they don't build BMW's in japan so I can't see it not being under coated properly.... which japanese imported cars suffer with... (uk cars are different) perhaps you might wanna delete the question and start again.

follow the simple pattern

what, where, when, how, who and why...

When my son was trying to insure his 650GS, most companies would only provide cover if it was EU spec. A call to our local dealer found that it was originally sold in Germany and was 'on the system' in UK so no outstanding recalls etc. I wouldn't get involved with Jap import unless it's a bargain.

Not sure what you mean about UK reg.
As already mentioned a Cert of Conformity will be requird for a non EU vehicle. I've read these are available from BM HQ at approx £100 AFAIR
You'll have VAT and import duty to pay too. VAT payable on accessories and delivery too.
Then the vehicle has to be inspected - and many of the local DVLA offices have closed. (They're actually called something else these day )
Take a look here

Motorcycle Single Vehichle approval: www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/motorcycle-single-vehicle-approval

Many thanks for the replies. I'll stay clear of this Japanese import.
