In search of the graves of Rorke's Drift VC winners

Hi all

Cheers Clive ! strange how thing happen ! reading a link from the tbm forum I had to give you a shout . (user name Hooky)

Yep ; Im a real relative of Henry Hook , hard to believe see http://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/vc/hook.htm.

I was also born In Glous, My old mum had told me about Henry (real name Alfred) but I have never really looked into my "famous" relative.

Will try to find out if he is a great grand father of great Uncle , not sure ???

Im not really a bloke who send much time on forums, but thanks for the pictures and will let you know what I find

What a fascinating reason for a bike ride. Thanks Clive :thumb2
:D

Nice ride report.

The lines I remember from the song are:

"Men of Harlech, lie thee sleeping?
Battle's o'er they borders creeping..."

Welcome to UKGSer :)

Good stuff Clive!

Just out of curiosity, who looks after the headstones? They're obviously much better kept than the civilian ones; do they fall under the remit of the War Graves Commission?

Yep, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for maintaining all the war graves. In Normandy there are a few full-time gardeners responsible for a handful of graveyards each. They get to know all the graves in their patch and often meet relatives and hear their stories.

Apparently it's a very sought-after job.

Thanks

Good morning to you
Really made my day that whished i had been there with you we donot remember those brave men enough and what there familys went thro. My mam used to like that song Men of harlech Thanks for that :thumb2

I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that CWGC only maintained graves of those who died in war? Perhaps the VC winners have special attention from their Regiment - can't find any info on that.

Enjoyed the wee write up Clive :clap, nice to remember such men

That Micheal Caine bloke must be getting old.
I thought he looked younger without the tache...

great report

Remembering those fallen in any war is an important thing.. I never would have thought to do it in this way! Excellent report and great idea for a ride out.

Thanks for sharing it!

I used to live near Zululand (Kwa-Zulu Natal) and rode out to RD and Isandlwhana many times. There's a decent enough museum there but the real chiller is at Isandlwhana where there are dozens of piles of white painted stones which are places where the lads bought it. Very moving it is. The locals living nearby won't generally go near the place.

We used to stay around Babanango and met Dr David Rattray a few times. He was the expert on R. Drift until the local lads offed him for giggles a year or so ago.

We met a SA guy in Lesotho who had been to the Brecon cathedral and museum and had been allowed to hold the letter sent out on that morning from Isa.

He said he was in tears at being allowed to hold such a document.

I was ashamed to say I had never travelled the 40 miles to see the museum - but having seen the sites, I shall.

We also visited the M.O.T.H. museum in Dundee.

So quiz of the week, to what am I referring??
