Increasing the low down grunt in an R1150GS

the only real way is to re degree your cams, couldnt tell to what tho,my bandit was to 106,std was 104ish, this results in lots low down but u will lose top end,a thing in my opinion the gs is already lacking,(my last bike was a 1246 stage 3 bandit 600 however)

lack of go.

On very tight hairpins make sure you are right on the outside ( europe not here!) which makes the turn have a bigger radius as possible. In 2006 (life is disapering quick!) we all went up the tour of france pases in the south of France which are very steep and tight. I only had on the standard gearing and it weas difficult as I also was loaded up with campin g gear. One of our number had an 1150 adventure (what else) with the optional low bottom gear
and he had no probs at all. aso I'sure that you are on the correct track but the 850 gearing is too low, I tried it for a while I but really might would be more suitable for very serious off roading as the adventure riders people
are prone to do!. You'll soon piock up a bevel box on this site and soon sell it again if it's no good. I was in the gs uk club for a bit but could never access the site and being a computer duffer followed my motto "if at first you don't succeed -give up" ( go down the pub!. Hope you sort it out ok clutches seem to take a lot of punishment. 70,000 plus on mine and still ok. (shouldent have said that!.) But I'm sure the lower gearing will help clutch life if used for commuting.

Cheers Dave, thought I recognised you!

I've frightened a few unsuspecting passengers (in cars) with the 'wrong side of the road' approach to European hairpins - it never works here 'cos everyone is too protective of their bit of road. I found the driving around Sorento one of the most enjoyable experiences on a road - ever -. No road rage, yet to the casual i.e Brit observer, everyone looked as though they were all over the place, until you realised that they were all behaving as though someone might be coming the other way on the wrong side of the road and were prepared to give way. Simple really.

Back to the FD. I do like the lower gearing, which I think gives the same low gear as the 1150 ADV. Maybe I should ignore the smell of hot clutch and go for it. Although I have heard of them giving up after only 20,000 miles.

I remember test riding a non-low first 1150 and I never really "clicked" at the difference but ive mostly ridden the adventurer.

Dont dip the clutch and trip to ride the corner above idle, better than slipping it and killing it in half the time.

Remus fitted already.

Richard

Remus endcan or "Y" piece ?.
Fitting a Y piece boosted my bottom end drive considerably.
The GS motor is noted for its grunt.No-ones upgraded engine parts for more top end have they?.
Does it have the standard GS long induction tubes?.
How many miles has the bike done and have you checked cylinder compression?.

As Hardley Ableson spout "You can't beat cubes".... well actually they have stopped saying that as the Japanese listened....:blast

Other than a big bore "upgrade" cam timing will win the day......:thumb

Y piece plus standard can

No known engine mods.

Standard induction tubes (as far as I know). I have posted a separate thread about the benefits of fitting different tubes (from Motorworks) but I think I've got my facts wrong:o

Mileage 20,000 Km in Germany and about 20,000 miles since I bought it from SPC in 1999.

No, the compression has not been checked. But I have every faith in Brian Giles and expect that he would have mentioned anything untoward - when he serviced it I moaned about it's performance. NB my previous bike was a Pan European.

I can empathise with the author of this thread. I've had my bike tuned a few times and I know it can be tuned for different setups. Didn't ask for it but it's been different from different mechanics. I know the square root of nothing about tuning but mines a r and she can be tuned for grunt or power at high revs. Both are nice actually:D Ask anyone about it and they seem to look like this  for some reason.
