Indian phone call to house.... Computer hack

Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Anyone know the consequences?

I am away working, my son who knows very little about computers receives a phone call from an indian telling him someone has hacked our computer... My son listens to the guy and goes to the dos prompt and types a single word, which of course he cannot remember. My wife rings me and I tell them to stop the computer and not talk to the guy.

How far has the problem gone, and what are the implications..
 
it's a well known scam (do a search on this site).

A one word entry shouldn't be disasterous?

I'm guessing they asked him to type ipconfig to get your ip address. If that's as far as it went I can't see it being a problem. :thumb2
 
Might be worth pressing the young man.
If they asked him to type ipconfig
then asked him to read out what it said
then something popped up on his screen which he accepted
......then you're fecked - they're in. You'll need some good malware/virus software.

No not ipconfig but he is not sure what he typed but it was not that.

Back from lunch here in Bruxelles, it is a new computer with none of my stuff on it, the only thing with a password is yahoo. I have changed that password (or am about to) then a mate is going to do a system restore,

My guess is a lucky escape...
 
Just amazing. If someone tells your son to jump off a bridge, does he go ahead and do it? Teach him some common sense!

Harvesting CLSIDs for some nefarious purpose perhaps? Wonder what you can do with that particular piece of information?

Bit of research reveals CLSID is likely the same for same version of Windoze, so the bod on the phone can impress with you with their knowledge. Suggesting the real target is slightly further along the process.

Not only can my children can spell the personal pronoun "their" correctly, but they have enough common sense not to talk to some low life at the other end of the phone.

I am very happy with my son (apart from this) he has a total non interest in computers and all that shite. He was taken in (as was my wife) by the guy... I am delighted to live with a family who do not give a shite about computers macs etc.

Anyway there is absolutely naff all on the computer in question, a friend of mine called in an hour later and did a system restore.

Should be OK

BTW did I say I am delighted to have kids who do not spend their life on the ferkin computer....

Oh, and by the way my son outside of computers, game boys and all, has loads of common sense. You should meet him, it is his birthday in two weeks he will be 19 and I will fly home to celebrate with him.:thumb

I think, muppet, you will find that "THERE" was correct, not "THEIR" as you mistakenly suggest.

"Their" indicates ownership.

If you're going to be arrogant, at least don't be ignorant. :blast

Arrogance and ignorance...my two pet hates...and too often found in the same people. :D
