My right hand indicator packed up this morning, then later in the day it started to work, but only if I used the brakes either would start it off and to cancel I had to hold in the cancel switch for a couple of seconds, now back to not working

Dodgy wiring around the head area???

Sounds like the braking action id making/breaking the contact.......that's where I'd probably start looking after the flasher relay and light end is ruled out.

Pete,

My left hand indicator switch packed up a couple of months back, it started indicating without pressing the switch then sometimes failed to cancel.

According to the MBW garage the FIM tells them to change the right hand switch first. So they changed the right hand then the left hand and cured the problem.

Turns out left hand switch had failed.

Gazza had a similar problem.

LH indicator switch

Have no power to LH indicator switch on '97 R 80 GS Basic - solution?

Now sorted, it was the switch again, 6500 miles to a switch thats poor, it was full of salty water. Must be spray from the front wheel getting in at the opening under the switch gear, now closed that gap with tape.

Just a FYI

My switch has died also, but as we Yorkshire types taught the Scots how to save money, I thought I would strip it down and have a looksy at the bits, it turns out the actual indicator switch [not the £114 bmw part] is an ITT Cannon IP67 sealed button type K12, priced at approx £2.12:D
needless to say I will order a couple and bugger to the cost:D

Chris,

Seems like a similar thing has happened to mine on the RHS... with your experience of having taken it all apart can you tell me how you get the assembly off the handlebar... I undone every bolt & pulled off all the switches but aside from breaking the plastic I can't see what's holding it on.

Thanks in advance...

Cheers for that quick response Steve... I'll give it a go this again this weekend. I'm hoping I don't have to take the whole assembly off just to get at the switch.

Is this the same type of setup on the 850/1100GS,
as my RH indicator switch acts up the odd time, especially for the
first few uses of the day. (bit like myself I guess)

Regards
Fran

I've also got a problem with RH indicator on '05 12GS - was intermittant for a while but now doesn't work at all.

While its still under warranty its a hassle to get to the dealer for something so small - does anyone know if its a (sealed) switch or contact problem, ie can I open it & spray WD40 in to cure it, even till the next service, or do I need to get the dealer to replace it ?

you only have to take the rear of the switch off the bars [ie the lever and fluid resevoir stay fixed on]

once you get the rear of the switch off the lil round switch should be visible and then it's a case of prying the unit apart

iirc only a couple of mins to get apart and then a few mins to get the switch out of the housing, then a day for the delivery from farnells in Leeds to get your switches at around two quid each, 10 mins with a soldering iron fitting the new one- job done

ps the back of the indicator switch that depresses the ITT button is an arm type protusion [sp], this arm may need filling a little due to a slight difference in height of the ITT buttons

good luck

My R/H switch was also giving problems, WD40 gives a quick fix but a clean-up of the switch is in order.
I also didn't bother to report this to the dealer at the time as I thought it was a one off but it has happened a few times (out of warranty now) so I must get it sorted properly myself.

I though I had suffered the last of naff switches with the passing of my Laverda, didn't think a new BMW would keep me amused the same way.

indicator switch

can you tell me where to get button micro switches as mine is buggered

Did you find out where to buy the switch and the stock number? - My indicators have packed up too - - Just before my trip to France next week.

take it back to dealer they replace the whole switch under warranty and if you pay it costs 145 quid

Slight problem with that....my 1150 is six years old. There must be a solution out there somewhere that doesn't involve being ripped off!!
Best wishes...
