Indicators......help me, please!!!

I decided to move on from my trusted 650gs to a 12gs, so I took a test ride on a demo... Only to discover that the indicators are so different.
Every time I try to turn them off I end up pulling the throttle and going faster than I wanted
Is there a knack for turning them off or am I just being a girl......all comments welcome.

might simply be due to you having very small hands... perhaps.

I have seen signal minders... auto cancel gizmos for sale. Might be worth your while getting one of these and having it fitted. the ones i've seen switch the indicators off after a predetermined period... say. 6 seconds. or more.
nippy norman sells them i think.

I know exactly what you mean. I had the same problem when i first bought my 1150 GSA so it's not a girly problem and I don't have small hands.

I suggest you do as I did - practice. It's only because you're not used to it. Play with the cancel button to find a comfortable way of pushing it. I found I was trying to reach a part of it that I didn't need to.

Even after a year and a half I still struggle sometimes with both the indicators and the horn - I know what you mean about sometimes accelerating when you try to hit the cancel button, done that as well and I sometimes get the horn instead of left turn.......but at least the indicators self cancel on a 12 so you dont need to worry about them staying on.
I've tried practising with the bike stationary but sometimes when on the road I still wish I had the good old one button setup found just about everywhere else. Persevere I suppose.

After a while I learned to press the whottsit upwards with the knuckle of my thumb without accelerating.

I guess it also depends on whereabouts you grip the throttle.

It willl improve - honest injun.

I'm a bit of a girl.. so I've been told.. and a year on still sometimes have the throttle cancel indicator problem... I've found it particullarly tricky with my muffs on during the winter commute.. they just seem to make it a bit tricky..

Like said previously using the knuckle of your thumb seems to work for me 98% of the time...

You could always try the BMW car drivers trick of not bothering to indicate at all

I struggled at first, same as everyone.... until I realised that you only need to touch the very tip of the cancel switch - don't try to stretch to plant your thumb on the main body of the switch.


I guess That made me a girl too.

But I did Offroad Skills a fortnight ago, so I'm a real man now!

It's sorted 'cos it's a 12, but Nippy's cancelling doodah was mentioned earlier......

It's called a signal minder and it's made by Kissan....I've had one for a year and it's excellent......

It's a straight plug in swap for the original BWM flasher unit that lives in the fuse box.......20 secs to fit or remove........

You can select three periods before the indicators cancel..mine last about 8 seconds, but if you've got the brake on (ie waiting at lights etc) it overides the cancel function until the brakes are off then it carries on its countdown to turn them off. (that's assuming you conect the single wire to the brake light to activate this function)


It also runs the indicators as running lights, on one of three didfferent brigtnesses.......or off if you'd prefer.....just adds a bit more visibility maybe?

I've also got (and this was the main reason I bought the signal minder) a pair of Vectralights......little LED strips that act as repeater indicators.....they're red on the back and amber to the front.....

The reds glow double bright when I brake, and they all scan upwards when I indicate (ok, strictly speaking they're illegal 'cos it means I'm showing flashing reds to the rear but I've neve had a problem even riding in front of the fuzz)

I put them on 'cos my Vernatechs are so big they obscure the rear indicators from anything more than about 30 degrees off my rear centre line.....not good, but with the vectralights on the outer top corner of the panniers, the indicators are visible all around (plus I've got outer edge markers in case anyone overtakes at night )

Thoroughly recommended for any 11xx series or previous GS model

He also has some dodgy wiring on his rear brake light (but not on the Vectralights) which means his rear light lights up, flashes, glows on and off, flashes again, raher like a cheap disco. Eventualy it will fix itself when the bulb blows!

The indicators on the 1200 self-cancel after about 200 metres when you are moving. Sort of annoying:

(A) A motorway as, if you flick the left turn indicator on at the 300m marker for a junction, the flashing ceases before you reach the exit.

(B) It's a bit too long in town (I live in central London) as you can be sure to pass several other roads in the 200m distance.

The trick is not to try to push the cancelation button too hard or too close to the end furthest from the bar end. A slight tap as you wind the power on will do the trick.

This was my first BMW. I hated the indicators for the first week. Now I think they are completely logical. Only downsides now?

(1) I have got so used to using my right hand to signal right I am flicking the windscreen wipers on when I drive the car.

(2) I struggle for a mile or two when go back to riding a bike with conventional buttons.
