Inexpensive Alu Panniers

Pannier & Frame update

Picked up my bike today having left it with a fabricator to make me some frames to mount my Alu boxes on.
Unfortuneately they worked out almost as expensive as a set of Givi would have cost me from the UK but still delighted with them none the less.

Anyway, got home and tackled a rough mounting. Still need to put on the support strut accross the back of the frames and strengthen the mountings inside the boxes.
Total width of the bike is only 93cm which I am over the moon with given the width that some boxes create but it does make it extremely tight getting the bike down the side of the house and once the boxes are powder coated I will have to sort something out or they will be scratched to bits.

Total cost of boxes and frames if anyone is interested will end up (after powder coating) just shy of €400. Which is not bad given prices to buy online. And also sold my touring panniers and liners prior to part finance these.

Anyway here are some photos of progress so far.

Looks good Robbie.. Im sure they will be excellent when powder coated.

Well the boxes are finished now. Got them powder coated and picked them up today.
Total cost for boxes and frames was €383, so a good result for the money, I reckon anyway.
They look superb having been powder coated and of course with a few essential stickers.

BTW if anyone is interested in getting there boxes re-done/powder coated, I was charged €10 per box which is fantastic value.

Thanks, Delighted with them. I got the H&B bars powder coated recently and he only charged me €10 per bar that time too so he is extremely reasonable.

They look pretty cool.. Next you will have to get a top box made :clap
Anyway Im off to the pub..
Cheers..

Going to remount my own top box. Just need to make up some brackets to raise it so I can open the lid on the right box.

Christ, I paid €100 to have a rear sub frame, airbox and centre stand done on monday. I used Quality powder coating on Greenhills Road , D12. I know where I will be going next time.:blast

Re; Powder Coating

Just to let people know, as people are contacting me, that if you want to get bars or frames powder coated they need to be down to bare metal prior as this guy does not do sand blasting.
So while it seems cheap to get the bars done you have to also consider the cost of stripping the frames or bars.
The boxes were brand new so no prior work was needed.

Well done yourself, that's a mighty job. :thumb2

How did you work the mounting of the pannier to the frames? I'd be very interested to see some pics please. :clap:clap

I had some channel/U/n (everyone has a different name for it) aluminium welded to the boxes. I then drilled through the frames, boxes and channel brackets and ran bolts through to hold in place.
The only downside to this is that the frames are 19mm diameter and the channel bar is 25mm overall so 23mm internal so there is a bit of play but will sort that with washers or rummer grommets to counter that.

Will post some pictures for you later.:thumb2

A simple enough solution that. :)

I must say that the boxes look grand. For the money you spent they are great value, but nothing, in my opinion, comes close to the satisfaction of doing stuff like that yourself. :clap:clap
