I contacted Castrol after being told by a dealer that 20/50 ss will be phased out...
Here is their response..
"20W-50 will be ideal, although we have just introduced the Power 1
Racing 10W-50 full synthetic which is BMW preferred grade now for the
boxer engines, so if it's run in and you want a higher performance
product, the Power 1 Racing would be the best oil for protection and
performance - but Only BMW will carry it."

I wonder how many of you will be changing over to the Power 1 at nearly 40 quid for 4 litres??

Thanks John,
That is a decent price....20 for 4 litres is fair...
I have seen some Fuchs oil at my local bike shop for 20 quid for 4 litres, but they only have 10/40 ss...not sure if i should use this weight though!!

20w / 50 seems to be the preferred choice during the summer months in the UK, and needed overseas where it tends to be a bit warmer :(

BTW the Hein Gericke oil is SG and mineral.

Wait until BM start making this oil the 'standard product' during services. That'll shove costs up a bit!

I spoke to Jim Cray today, he advised using a 15/50 ss which Fuchs make and my local bike shop should be able to get for me... He also said use a car oil 15/50ss from someone like Halfrauds....
I am going to try this...

I have a 77k 2002 1150GSA and was wondering what the members thought here about the best oil to use
:hide

hehe
Happy Hump Day

Relax was just a stitch up comment!

Was highly amused by the last thread that concerned oil and the collective sighs of 'Oh No Not again' that reverberated around the Forum

I use whatever oil Phil at Euroclassics tells me, end of.

Milner or amsoil 20/50 oils have been recommended to me ,both available on line at demon tweaks

On the continent this full synthetic oil (Castrol Power 1 Racing 10W-50) has been available for some time now. I put it in at last oilchange (30000km/18000miles). Very good cold starts, engine revs freely, hardly any oil consumption. Next week is 40000km maintenance, same oil will go in.

I don't understand why riders want to save on oil, having bought an expensive bike. The difference will show in the end.
My GS is my baby, and my baby gets the best. (:blagblah)

Gsband,
I agree with your comments....what i don't understand is, how one minute 20/50 ss is 'the ideal oil' for the GS...then suddenly, 10/50 fs is recommended??

It just pushed cost of my 1st service on my GSA up from £150ish to £192 although to be fair they gave me £10 discount. This bike is going to have to be 'something-else' to keep me away from the Honda showroom when the new Pan is released. I think what is getting to me most is having to pay for the first service and the cost of all the extras but I still have an open mind (and a sore butt, any cheap Sargent seats out there, let me know)

Wasting very expensive oils in the bmw boxer engines is a futile exercise... Those engines are very crude with large tolerances and can take anything.

Put good quality mineral oil of the right viscosity and change more frequently instead. You ll still save over synthetics...

I think it has to do with 10W-oil giving better cold starts in any T°, and better lubrication at start in cold weather. My GS stands in a garden shed, so T° goes down in winter. I ride my GS through wintertime, so 20W- is definitely not ideal.
In any case I noticed the difference between cold starts (10W- better than 20W-) last winter.
