info please on charging the gs

bought the new model R1200 gs lc te and with it being the "cambus system" I was also advised to buy the cambus optimate 4 trickle charger.. but have been told that the GS may not charge if you leave the b.m.w satnav in the factory fitted sat nav dock. is this correct? surely you can still charge the GS via the power socket if the b.m.w sat nav is left on the bike. other wise it would mean removing the sat nav every time you want to use the trickle charger to keep the battery fully charged.
 
To be honest I'd never leave the sat nav on the bike if left over night. Problem solved.

ok I understand that.. not thinking of leaving sat nav on over night unless my GS is safely lock away in my garaged.. the reason I'm asking is I always like to connect the charger all the time when in my garage prefer not to remove the sat nav.. don't always use sat nav for directions also like to use it for info from the bike. just curious to know if it could still be charged if sat nav was left on bike.

Mines plugged into to an optimate in the garage all the time, sat nav in cradle bike is fine, nav is fine, battery is fine.....and now I've forgotten what it is you wanted to know :blast
 
What's the longest you'll be leaving the bike for, without riding? I've left mine for 8 weeks, and haven't ever used a trickle charger. It's a brand new bike, with a brand new battery. Unless you're leaving it for months on end, it won't need a charger.
 
I use the Optimate 4 on mine with and without the nav5 plugged in and it's fine, though I use the optimate via a fused lead direct to the battery rather than via the heli socket which also doubles up to supply power for my airman pump so there's no chance of the canbus switching the power off to the pump should I get a flat tyre
 
I'm convinced that if you are storing the bike over winter then taking the battery off and keeping it a cool cupboard in the house with a charge up in Spring is better than leaving it connected to an optimate over winter in the garage. I have tried both ways and the former seems better. Battery lasts longer.

I have not tried this with the GS yet but with every other bike owned. However I'm not sure if the GS wizardry electronics will like an extended period of no juice?

+1 if they break into the garage then I'm sure it won't be the satnav they are after....

I use a normal old optimate with the direct to battery leads and all is fine. :clap
 
There's a live terminal on the right and an earth, might be the battery earth can't remember but they are both on the right hand side.

Ok.. do you use the power point via the cambus or direct from battery? I know direct from battery will always charge battery.. but was told by b.m.w tech.. that using optimate via power point hence through cambus system will not not charge with sat nav in cradle.. what the tech said was.. he as had a few owners saying that they have connected a optimate 4 cambus compatible to the gs with the sat nav in cradle and the bike battery as not charged! think the tech said.. that it turns on the sat nav or the power point turns off! How long will the bike be sitting for, unridden?
 
I don't no if this is any use,but recently had a flat battery of which my dealer replaced under warranty.The day I an going on my trip decide to check it.Flat.now after Several phone calls managed to drive to another dealership that was open.they then done a full check over and then completed a update on the old software and since then it has been fine.i did on the first instance buy the Bmw charger and without that would of have to rely on Bmw assist.just a note was told by the dealer when using the socket you firstly should turn the ignition on then 30 seconds later switch off to let the campus do its thing
