Innovative ideas for back seat 1200gs

You can always buy a kit to fit a Vario top box in place of the pillion seat. Its a BMW part, works great. Makes getting on and off the bike a little more difficult unless you have long legs though! I have used this set up for a while now. I rarely carry a passenger and don't like the way the normal Vario box mount has the box quite a way back on the bike. If necessary the box comes off QD in exactly the same way as the normal rack and the base plate comes off like the pillion seat does.
 
£188 - and the rest. It's $80 for postage to the UK, and then £55 for duty and VAT. Total works out to be just over £300.

It IS a good box and I like mine, but streuth, it ain't cheap (although still less than a Vario and mounting plate - but not by enough).

That's my man I like your way of thinking, who else but an Irish man could come up with utter crap like that if it would have been made of nice stainless or polished alloy Ok but that shite no thanks....:aidan

Actually, during my more sober moments in Canada I was thinking of doing one of these after the toolbox............

And I kinda guessed I could do it for less than £200.......

I`ll hope to get topside with a fuelling system rack I am working on then maybe look at something if anyone would be interested?
 
My cheapskate solution to this was to buy a mk1 Vario top box, the version that cracks round the mounts and is therefore useless on the rear rack. Half a dozen holes in the right place through the bottom of the Vario, remove the rear seat, long machine screws with penny washers through the holes and into the threaded inserts under where the rear seat fits, jobs a good 'un. No quick release, but as I never use a pillion seat it's not a problem.

I know it's not going to fall off on bumps as well. Not perhaps the most elegant of solutions when used with GSA side boxes, but my bike's never going to win any prizes for appearance.

And the lock matches all the others, only one key required.
