Insurance (and what are you owners doing to your bikes)

Just part exchanged my Goldwing for a new GSA ASA. I struggled getting insurance on the Goldwing , 52 years old, IAM, full no claims and was still getting ridiculous quotes. Then someone asked me if I had a classic bike and if I do I should go to Peter James. I added then Goldwing and now the GSA on to my Honda C90 insurance with no, no claims required for about half the cost I was getting from the comparison websites . You have to be a member of a classic club.

I'm the same, have a BMW R100 insured with Peter James and a member of the VMCC so get a good discount. One thing to note if I read the details correctly, any bike insured on a classic bike policy doesn't build no claims, which might be an issue if you then want to move to another policy with your more modern steeds.

I have my modern bike insured with BIkesure at the moment.

You also only get market value for the Bike so if you are unlucky enough for something to happen shortly after you have purchased it New you are unlikely to get a new for old like on most of policies. Personally, it’s a risk I’m willing to take for the significant reduction in insurance cost for each of their own.

I've used 'Bikesure' for about 10 years. When I picked the bike up (1300 gs asa ) in December it was £174 to swap my insurance from the Guzzi's. However that was only until 1/3/26. So this week I started looking for insurance. Bikesure's best was somewhere around £800. Best quote was £479, but that was with no other cover whatsoever and I'd never heard of the company, so gave them a miss.
Eventually went with BMW Motorrad. £552 £800 excess Protected no claims Legal cover Accessories and clothing cover and some other stuff. It did take me most of the day to sort out. What a ballache.
Quite a few would not even quote.

Just replaced the r1250r with a new 1300gsa and was pretty shocked at the insurance cost.

Initial quote from cornmarket (whom I’ve been with since forever) came back at £1400. Well over double the R and that of previous GSAs. Even with a quick meerkat compare the cheapest was 1k.

Ended up staying with cornmarket at £1100 but was pretty shocked at the cost.

That’s with no accidents no convictions and garaged in a decent area.

I maybe should have got a few more quotes and tried Motorrad, but cornmarket has never minded the bike being owned by the business.

I recently started looking for a quote to see if I could get a better deal I did the usual comparison sites and Bikesure came out with decent cover and price .
Bikesure contacted me & ran through my details and that’s were it all started going wrong the woman on the phone got to the part where they ask your occupation status & when I said I was a house husband she accused me of being dishonest by putting that down 😱 I pointed out I have used house husband for years ( as that actually comes up on the drop down box on some insurance websites )with different insurance companies and never had a problem.
She then went on to say I should put unemployment or retired both of which would be wrong as the definition of unemployed is without a job but actively looking for work which doesn’t apply to me .
I don’t class myself as a pensioner as I’m not receiving a pension.
Then she went on to say that i probably would not get paid out if i had to claim
I went on to say that i have been covered with bikesure a few years back so go & have a look at what was put down as my occupation she came back with “other means “
needless to say I didn’t bother taking out their policy.
Ended up getting a lower price with my present insurer Hastings.

Interesting. I'm currently with Bikesure, due to expire end of March

When I looked online, their renewal was circa £1100 but Hasting (who I just renewed the car insurance with) came out at about £800..

This will be my 3rd year with Hasting and always seem quite professional over the phone and usually come back with a good price , like all insurance you only find out how good it is when you have a claim
🙄

My renewal for my 2 yr old 1300GS is £590 with Bennetts / Highway. The cheapest for the same cover on a price comparison site is £385 with Perfornace Direct BUT the underwriter is Markerstudy who's reviews are some of the worst I've ever seen.

That's seems like quite a disparity assuming similar coverage and driving record.

I had a policy with Markerstudy last year, during which my 1250GS was written off due to a collision with a deer. Honestly I couldn't fault them. They were easy to contact, I spoke to the assessing engineer a couple of times on the phone, and the payout was generous (75% of what I paid new, on a 4 year old bike).

Just had my renewal with IAM (cornmarket) that's gone up from £237 to £321 with markerstudy on a bike (2023 1250RS SE) that's a year older with no convictions or accidents and max no claims. The bike insurer have come up with prices starting at £135 with Hastings or £172 for Hastings premium so likely I'll be moving unless cornmarket can pull a rabbit out of the hat
