Hi all,

I recently moved to UK and I am planning to buy my first motorcycle here (hopefully, it's going to be a GS).

I am trying to understand what the insurance cost is going to be. I live in Woking, I ride motorcycles for more than 15 years, and I am trying to get a quote for a GS (value of around 6000£). I tried to do this over the phone with Bennetts, spend 30 minutes and challenged my patience with a rude customer support representative and the conclusion was a 2000£ per year quote for comprehensive insurace.

Is this normal or do I get a quote like this because I hold an EU license? Or is it because l don't live long enough in the UK. It seems to be ridiculously expensive.

Anyone shedding light on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You could try some of the comparison websites, here's a couple to start but there's loads more on google.

Not having a UK licence and only moving here recently will obviously effect your quote, as will where you live, how many miles you think you will be doing and what you intend to use it for. Make sure you answer any questions they ask honestly otherwise it could invalidate your insurance which could lead to a whole load of trouble if the answers you gave were false in order to get a lower premium.

Good luck

You have an EU license, no claim bonus, no history of driving over here. Plus all the other standard variables (mileage, where you park it, etc.)

As suggested, try comparison sites, but your first policy will be most probably expensive. It will go down from the second year.
I was in a similar position more than a decade ago.

It's a pity, other countries do recognize past claim free years. I don't understand if this is because of Brexit or if it's standard for UK insurance companies. It's a pity.

When I moved over (2007) there was a way to translate all the insurance paperwork. It was a pain in the ass and just paid more for the first year. It went down massively the second year.

Just accept it, it’ll be expensive for the first year, a bit cheaper the second year and so on. Keep it clean, park it in the garage, etc.

As Bennett’s have indicated. It’ll be £2000+ the first year. Same with the car, a bit cheaper with black box fitted.

The GS is expensive to insure. Easy to nick and desirable.

You might be better off getting a more modest bike for a year or 2, building up some no claims, then upgrade to a GS.

If your going to stay in UK get a U.K. D/L sooner rather than later

As a start, you need to present your insurance case in the best possible light. Make sure you mention how many years with no insurance claims you've had (being able to back it up with evidence from your previous non UK insurer); See what putting a limit on annual mileage to a realistic level will do for you; State where you'll keep it overnight (obviously left on a street in Woking will almost guarantee a high premium!) and if garaged, ensure you use a sold secure ground anchor or some other sold secure locking device. Pick a bike which is alarmed and with an immobiliser (reduces premium) and preferably with a tracker or data tag of some sort. These things may all help reduce your premium. I'd suggest sorting your UK licence before applying for insurance. That may also help but only if they don't penalise for nr of years held (or lack of). Unfortunately, insurance companies will look for any detail to argue for a raised premium. The more you can get this down by things as mentioned, the better.
