Hi, just wanted opinions on the following situation:

I'm getting a new 1200 and just been ringing for quotes. Unfortunately my current insurer will only cover the 1200 if i get Thatcham alarm + datatag it. This policy expires in may, but if i cancel it now and move to a different insurer then i'll lose this years no claims

Got quotes from other insurers and they will cover it without the alarm or datatag but then this years no claims wont count...i added the extra year into the sytem and it would make it £90 less if i had it.

So...i can either pay 350 quid for alarm and tag, then save about £160 in May (extra years no claims + alarm / tag discount),
or..and not sure about legality of this...I sell my old bike but dont cancel policy. Then i take out a pay as you go ebike one until May. In May i cancel ebike and use my now completed no claims year on another policy!

Thoughts anyone?...Will the second idea work, or will the insurers know i have sold the bike.

I am thinking maybe i will fork out for the alarm as it gives some extra security, and as the 1200's are becoming more popular + 'cos of high price they may start to become theft targets.

Cheers,

Dave

....sounds like a plan to me.

When I changed bikes from a Fazer to a CBR, my insurer would not cover me on the CBR and I lost a years no claims without option. Didn't make much difference as I already had 6yrs.

The pay-as-you-go thing sounds legit to me.

As for an alarm.....it'll rarely pay itself back in insurance discounts. The BMW alarm doesn't at all, as its not Thatcham approved. But you've got to consider whether its worth the money. I can hear the alarm on my bike from where I park it, so for me its worth it.

i was going to use ebike but they dont cover switzerland.

My only concern with my cunning plan is that i wont be the registered keeper when i sell the old bike. But i'm not sure that the insurance company will find this out....

In my case the BMW insurance was much the cheapest. They do take the BMW alarm into account, and when the bike goes in for service, they put the loan bike on your policy without charge.

There have been reports of compatibility problems with non BMW alarms and they are not easy to wire into the canbus system.. Mind you the datatool on my last bike was way more sensitive than the BMW one is, so if you really think an alarm achieves anything more than an insurance discount it is worth investigating.

hmm i think i might have discovered a flaw in the master plan.

If i take out the ebike pay as you go policy, they will want to see evidence of my no claims (?correct) and to get this i will need to ask motorcycle direct for a certificate, which will probably only be issued if the policy is cancelled :( :( :(

Can you get a Thatcham alarm onto a 12GS? After-market alarms won't work as the Canbus won't talk to them, and the BMW alarm isn't Thatcham'd.

Perhaps you need to go back to the insurance company and ask them how they would recommend you solve the connundrum.

yeah pretty sure you can fit a datatool s4 (their newest one), well thats what the BMW dealer offered to fit anyway

dont forget that your old bike's new owner will want to insure it too. So he rings round with the reg number and E bike discover they have 2 customers insuring the same bike.

Even if he doesnt, the companies are linked to the DVLA database so their systems could flag up a change of owner automatically.

When you are spending 10k on a new bike, why are you so concerned about the £90?

well when you put it like that it sounds bit silly :D

Just hate the whol insurance thing...dont mind spending cash on shiny bits of metal..its the expensive paperwork bits i hate!

I found BMW insurance the cheapest, and they also insured my old "bike" (C1200) on the policy as I couldn't ride both at once. Even with BMW insurance the discount for the alarm system meant I would have "paid it off" in 17 years! Didn't have an alarm fitted! Also didn't fit one as even if I were to hear it go off, I'm not interested in confronting would be thieves in London - that's what insurance is for.
