Insurance Seems High

Did a quote check with CN having sold my r9 T Urban for something smaller. Refused to quote on a V Strom 650. Quote for the new Honda GB350 s
a bargain at £850 !!!
I know its all down to individual companies, risk, sales staff and so many other variables, including time of day and which way the wind is blowing but....

Same post code brick garage storage for last 25 years, several high value, new bikes of all varieties including GSA' s, K1200 S, ZRX 1200 etc .
Max NCD, riding since 1979 and always had what I considered to be reasonably competitive quotes.

GB350S quote double the price that for CB1100 RS. OK not a new bike but over 3 x engine size, 2 x value = 4 x the premium ????
 
Well, my daily, a 2019 M4 is £1,700 a year. Modified Z4 £1200, Discovery 2 overlander, £750, R9T £700. even the bloody 1100GS is £400 !!!! madness.
 
When I got my bike just before Christmas phoned Carol Nash as I had multi bike policy with them commuting and domestic, pleasure 9+ NCB limited mileage to 5000 per year. My R80GS and my 2013 twin cam.
Said I need to change the 1200 for the 1250 @ value of £19K....Sorry sir we cannot get anyone to insure you.....WHY....I asked...the value of your bike is too high...no way round it just would not insure it.

So went to BMW and they came back with one quote out of five companies, 4 declined that'll be £1300 per year....How much.....no movement at all.
Ended up dropping the commute and it reduced it down to £550.00...
 
Seems to me, that more and more people are not going to be taken in by promises of "but our insurance provides better cover and we have a UK call centre" type comments and simply shop around for the cheapest, period, to keep us legal. When I think of the two times over 40 years I've had to claim on insurance, then I for one, will now be shopping for the bottom line cheapest using comparison websites. The rise in compulsory excess in recent years has been enough to swing it for me. The extra I would have paid, I will be putting into additional security measures instead. Rip off Britain has seen unbelievable hikes in insurance since lockdown ended and it's hard seeing the justification for much of the rises. The exceptions may well be things like London postcodes and the list of most stolen models prompting rises to cover true costs of claims. I'm a bit weary of being ripped off by insurance companies. I don't live in a problem area, but my premiums have all risen inexplicably in the past two years.

That's why I have insured with CN over many years. As used to be the case and was much easier to deal with.

My recent experience , 99.9 % of numerous calls to them recently for quotes were answered by operators in South Africa. Albeit they speak the same language there are different terms they use and can't comprehend or explain a UK equivalent. e.g.

" Where is your motorcycle impounded ?

Various operators have been spoken to and none could explain the term used. By not being able to answer this they cannot proceed further with the quote.
I eventually worked out that I think / assume they mean

" where is your bike kept overnight ? "

I never make assumption's, especially buying insurance, as it tends to bite you back if you need to make a claim. As we know, they are quick to sell you a policy but not so keen on paying out if they can find a way to wiggle out of it for whatever reason.

As an aside, if you get an on line quote, all the questions are written in English and the particular question shown above re " impounded?" is not asked.

So all very clear. However beware if buying insurance for an older bike. I didn't ask for, didn't consider, didn't want but was sold a Classis Policy once.
As some may know, and I discovered a year down the line, this type of policy does not collect any NCD.
Insurance companies attitude at the end of the policy on renewal is " Had you bought it in person by phone, our agent would have been obliged to tell you this. Not so when you buy on line, we make the decision based on the age of your bike "
