It's that time again to re-new the insurance policy, but what I want to know is not the cheapest you have found but what company is the best to deal with? Looking for a company that has a good history of dealing with claims ( I have never claimed but you just never know) and does not hit you with a mental excess when you do. You came name and shame the companies to avoid as well. Cheers.

You will find endless threads on this if you use the search button. :thumb

It all depends on your circumstances, what you need and powers of getting the best price.

Nice to get an update though Sarge as companies often change.
I am with "Motorcycle Direct" (Aviva) £121 on a new 1200GS, SD&P only. Never had to claim so can't comment, just bike insured. Mistake on my part not to include all my other gear so will be adding it all on renewal.

Me too for a similar premium (slightly more with legal protection).

Suggest you speak to them on the phone as you will be able to include and "non standard" extras (exhaust, panniers, heated grips, HiDs etc) which you can't do via their web site. British call centre with bike-knowledgable staff when I called. I also know where Aviva is should any dramas occurr.

definately insure your gear
if you do (heaven forbid) have an accident for what ever reason and need to claim the gear is suprinsingly expensive when it ALL needs replacing (i had a complication with a fallow dear in october on me old bike)

that was MCE, they were pretty slow getting the money out considering it was open/shut case, but they were always pretty helpful on the phone, and waiting time wasnt ever too bad (5mins on hold maybe)

i would also suggest making sure the "RAC Cover" that comes with it, includes recovery after an accident and not just breakdown as I had to dish out £200 to get my wreck of a bike back home!

Managed to get quote from MC Direct (Aviva) £135.45 with £175 excess but no gear cover. BMW quoted £198.11 with gear cover and an excess of £400. Still working on it, have come across cheaper quotes but from insurers I have never heard of so staying away. Waiting for the bods who have claimed and had no hassle to come along.

Your question is about sevice.

Buy what you think is best.

If you look at all the responses on UKGSer you will find that for every one that is happy with the service from broker / insurer X you will find two that are unhappy, swearing blind that insurer / broker Y was better... And another two that will claim that that is bollocks, that insurer / broker Z is best. The reasons why are sometimes unknown or have little to do with anything close to reality. But that is life, I guess. You may well discover the same response if you ask about dentists, vets or motorcycle dealers....everyone will have a contradictory story to top someone else's.

In short, you and you alone, makes the final call. If you hit a price you are happy with then you have cleared the only hurdle of certainty. The next 365 days are completely uncertain, not least as claims (and their consequences for you) are completely random. Why guess what 'might' happen?

I recently went with Carol Nash and the excess was a silly amount, £500 or something like that, but they do a a excess insurance for £29 per year that pays the excess  My problem is that I had a few years riding on classic policies that don't accrue and no claims so I only had a couple of years, so my insurance was expensive anyways.

Its seems more than ever your post code changes your quote.
Im Leeds, LS18, not a bad area and at 55, with 37 years riding and one small claim 4 years ago, my cheapest quote was £330 with MCE insurance. Carol Nash were over £450.
My friend has 3 years riding experience but lives in rural Selby, his R1200GSA was fully comp for £145 from the same company.

From my recent experience the number of non-Factory fit accessories is a problem for some insurers. Some of them don't like more than 3. So Sat Nav mount, Engine bars and some luggage is it, add some foglights, a hugger, a fender extender, and better screen and even even a sticker and the fun begins.
