I had my last bike stolen and lost an Emap with it. When claiming (through BMW insurance) I was informed that my cover was limited to £500 cover for accessories. Considering gloves, helmet, Autocom and GPS were lost this didn't go ver far.

Now I've got an SP3 - much more expensive so I want to ensure its covered. Home contents won't touch it and BMW insurance are uncertain whether its covered.

Any guidance as to the best way forward?

Why won't home contents cover it? When I binned my GSX-R a few years back I claimed for new leathers, lid, gloves etc from my household insurance as it wasn't covered on the bike insurance (I've since switched to Carole Nash who cover your gear up to £1k).

I'd check again with your home insurance. If it was a camera it would be covered so why not a GPS?

Adam :)

I have mine on the house insurance as well and it did not cost any extra money to add it either.

If your home insurance wont insure it then its time to move companies I would suggest?

The household contents insurance is with the AA andthey say the GPS is a car accessory and so not covered. Even though the were happy to take my cash for any item outside the home.

Insurance - legalised theft!

Arrrrr....wot did you tell them it was for?

just tell them its a portable GPS unit, that is suitable for car, motorbike, push bike or even hand held.

That said, now they have declined once, I doubt if they will change there mind in your favour!

I have had 2 GPS's replaced by my house contents insurance, one lost when a kit bag fell off the back of the bike and the other destroyed in an accident. On both occasions my insurance company paid up without question.

Do the AA know its a portable GPS and isn't permanently fitted? If they do and continue with there current stance I'd be looking elsewhere for my house contents insurance.

...On my household insurance, also. Listed as a 'Portable Valuable' just like jewellery, camera, guitar, amp etc. Cost a minimal amount to have this extra cover.

Household insurance

My insurance company are giving me grief about ym claim for damaged clothing from my recent 'off'.

I mean, you add it up, a helmet at £399, jacket at £399, boots at £115, Gloves at £85 and trousers are £130 is a LOT of money.

Funnily enough, I'm with Carole Nash and the guy who dealt with my renewal told me that A) my insurers don't do gear, and B) that if I wanted to get gear covered it would be outrageously expensive. He told me that I should claim though my household insurers for 'contents taken outside the home' or any 'accidental/all risks' cover that I have.

So far, Commerical Union are trying to make avery big drama out of a small crisis.

Very interesting.

I'm just about to make a claim for the gear from my recent crash. NU tell me to claim £250 (max allowable) on my bike cover. And the rest on my household (also NU).
All these maximums must be in the small print!

Anybody know if you can insure the GPSR separately?
