Hi all.
My standard gs1150 just lost some teeth on its starter motor and the fly wheel. Its a bit shabby and some bits such as the calliper bleed nipple have started to seize.

The engine is sound so am thinking if getting an adventure model and keeping my old standard gs as spares.

Having seen a few adventures they all seam to be twin spark and there for the heads look different. I'm told the wheels and disks also don't fit?!

Can anyone please tell me to what extent the parts are interchangeable on the two bikes and whether a standard 1150 is a useful reserve or parts for the adventure.

Many thanks

Pip

You get single spark adventures (I have one) up to about 2002. In reality, 99% of the parts are interchangeable. You can fit the adventure bits to normal and visa versa. The only things I can think of that wouldn't work are the centre/side stand as the adventure has longer shocks and sits a bit taller.

As for the wheels - that's BS as long as the bikes are about the same age as they changed the front calipers. I that was around 2002 too If your's has abs then look for an abs adventure too. The adventure wheels were anodised but thats the only difference I think. I've got mates that run std 1150 wheels.

I've got 2 R1100S's in pieces in the garage that I frequently rape for parts on the adventure too.

So I would just look for an adventure around the date of your bike

There are twin spark engines and single spark engines, they came in around late 2002 early 2003. Standard GS's have them as well as adv models.

All other parts can be swopped from standard GS to the adv model.
Wheels are all the same (just different colour finish), the difference is the abs/servo ring.

The only slight difference in the wheels is the later front wheels don't have the additional lugs for the abs ring. Early bikes had 10 lugs which 5 are for the disc and 5 are for the abs ring. Later bikes have only five lugs on the hub as the later abs ring is different and fits behind the disc.
I have an early bike with a later adv front wheel. I don't have abs though so not sure how the abs converts, but standard early discs work fine on them.
Abs systems might not be transferable, but why would you want to swop them?

The rocker covers might be transferable, but you would need the later plug caps to do this as the twin spark caps are different.

The adv has taller suspension so to transfer suspension would also require a change of side stand and centre stand. I believe there is also a slight difference in the driveshaft. It is interchangeable, but it is designed to work with the taller suspension.

Hi. Thankyou very much for the advice!
Next question is how interchangeable are parts from my old single spark for use as spares on a newer twin spark model?

This may have been covered above but wanted to desperate the question to be certain if the answer.,,

Thankyou!!

It's all answered above:blast

For anything that won't fit, use a hammer and gaff a tape.
