However much fuel there is in the tank, the fuel gauge only reads about three bars. Usually at start up no bars and then it fluctuates between 0 and 3-4 bars as the ride goes on.

Also last time I took the tank right down to warning light level the light came on after the bars had gone miles before - but I usually re-fuel at the 200 mile mark and the light came on at 215.

Had a close look in the tank (holding a match at a safe distance of course) and there is petrol in there. But no bars.

Anyone out there have any ideas on fettling the fuel gauge arrangements or is it a dealer fix?

Oh lucky you!!!!

There is no safe distant to hold a match anywhere near open fuel reservoir.
Just to sink it in, I'll forget politness and say how stupid.

When I was in service, one of our non comissioned officers lighted a small truck full of heavy machine guns and ammo. He was also lucky to escape personal injury - he was blasted away when the fuel tank ignited, without getting burned.

Please dont ever do it again.

I think woodsie was joking about the match, the words in brackets are meant as a joke.

Having had very similar problems with my temperature guage, I would suggest tracing the wiring from the tank sensor and open/clean/close every connector.

I always use a match to check for gas leaks - I'm not sure it works though cause I haven't found any yet :mmmm :bomb :eyesdown

Thanks for the help there.....

Mikyh - you win the prize for making unnecessary advise - I didn't use a match - I could have burnt my fingers - I used a lighter!

Tried it again today - bike sitting on the level, full to the top (no need to use lighter to check then) and only three bars showing - then.............

wait for it......

Four bars!!

Iain, thanks for the tip - I'll try checking the connections.

Gecko - thanks for the other tip - I'll be prepared for the next time I smell gas.

Mine does summat similar. Fill the tank, ride the bike, and within about 30 mls, display shows 2-3 bars. Stop in traffic, shows 5+bars. Ride again, goes down to 2-3 bars! I use it as a guide only and usually set the trip after each fill-up.

Calibrate your gauge

What I suggest is that you fill up your tank and instead of holding your lighted match some distance from the tank is that you actually drop it in the tank. This will ignite the fuel vapour and you will be able to trend the level as it burns away. Take readings every 10% level and check for linearity of your read out.

I once read this in Viz and apparently it works a treat.

Oh, by the way check your insurance policy first,,,,;)

Yes and how I roared with laughter all the way to the local hospital casualty department at how silly I was not thinking of that solution in the first place!

The black disconnect block inside the right plastic cover below the tank is the culprit. If the contacts are dirty or corroded the RID display starts to read less and less.

The solution is to obtain a small drill bit and clean out the female contacts and likewise with emery paper for the male contacts. If you can, tighten up the female contacts to make a better connection. Your display will return to normal.

Thanks City Slicker

I'll try the box under the tank and let you know if the problem's cured.
