intermittant cutting out - but i want help!

This happened on my r850r a few months ago i have since changed the bike but what happens if you have the servo assited brakes? With the ignition off the brakes barely have enough bite to stop when you are pushing the bike around in the garage

I'd imagine the engine braking from a sudden non running engine will bring you to a pretty quick stop.

Have you tried pushing the bike around your garage with it in gear

Got an 1150GSA a few weeks ago - kept cutting out to the point where it wouldn't start - I narrowed it down to the loom by the ignition but since it's under warranty sent it back to be fixed.
Half sorry I didn't fix it myself.

Will search this site properly next problem I have

This is a really helpful thread can you make it a sticky Mr Steptoe?

bmw my arse

BIKE BACK IN DEALERS NOW THREE WEEKS, AND TWO WEEKS A WHILE BACK,

STILL CANT SORT OUT PROBLEM OF CUTTING OUT, BRING BACK MY BANDIT.

Aaaarrrggggh!

Earlier this week, the ADV had passed the 70,000km mark, and I was raving about what a great bike it's been with absolutely no problems whatsoever:blast
Yesterday, I started it up, turned it round on the drive, and it cut out. Odd, thinks me, doesn't normally do that. Stalled again a couple of times, but I still put it down to the freezing cold.
This morning, I'm just pull out onto the south of France's biggest roundabout, when the whole thing feckin dies, right in front of a sleepy French bus driver who hasn't noticed 16 stone man stranded in middle of road on big motorbike:eek:
Anyway, investigating, and wiggling wires makes me wish I'd found this thread a long while back. Feckin BMW.
So, stupid question. That wee grub screw in the barrel, do you have to get it all the way out? I know my record for dropping nuts, bolts, etc into engines, and garage floors, never to be seen again. If I just loosen it enough to drop the wiring out, will that suffice? Steptoe?

It might do. I've never tried partially removing it, just in case it falls out when removing/replacing the new loom. So i remove it completely so i know where it is.

But when you buy the new ignition loom, also ask for the tiny fixing screw. I always do. Just in case. ;)

Hmm, sounds like I might need some magnetic, jeweler type screwdrivers...I'm sure I put them somewhere. Cheers Steptoe, I'll ask for a couple of spares :thumb2
Be interesting to see how much the parts cost here. Rear brake pads were 75 feckin euros in BMW Cannes...

This thread has just saved me much head scratching! So thanks!

My 02 1150GS started stuttering and generally being a pig on the way home from work yesterday... Everytime I turned the bars slightly to the right it stuttered and would feel like it had run out of fuel...(even though the tank was 1/2 full)

It got so bad I stopped in a layby near ridgewell (suffolk) to see what was the matter... And low and behold  bumped into another ukgser sitting in his car! :bounce1

After a few minutes gasbagging :jibber the bike fired up again and I was off... well at least for 200 yards.. then it started again.

Managed to nurse the old girl home.. a cup of tea...a few minutes looking at this thread... A quick check of the wires... And fault identified.

Phoned Cannons this afternoon, and the part wll be there tomorrow (sat) 9am... Thats good service if you ask me!

:D at least this time the fault is only 45 quid and an hour of my time!

My 99 1100 has just started doing the cutting-out thing. A quick search revealed this thread, with the usual excellent advice from Steptoe.

Neil, if you read this and still have it, would it be possible to PM me the photo of the small screw please?

Thanks
