Hi, my new to me Xchallenge has had a fairly comprehensive service and refurb. The issue seems to be a faulty engine rpm sensor. This has been diagnosed on Texa diagnostic equipment. Some days it starts fine and during the day will keep firing up. Other days it's turning over but won't fire? Before I blow £200 on a new sensor is there anything else I should check. It's in an independent mechanic who I have every faith in.
Thanks in advance.

another would be the throttle position sensor (TPS). There is a thread on here somewhere re how to reset (and clean if needed). There is also an extensive thread on ADVrider.com

Another one that is common (but I can't remember whether it just prevents starting or running as well) is one of the soldered joints of the wires in the ignition barrel breaking off. I've had that on a trail ride once, and is easy enough to fix/check. Take ignition barrel off (torx key I think), take black switch gear off the bottom, then check solder on the joints.

On the occasions it turns over but doesn't start, have you had the bike running prior but only for a short while?

Mine will start from cold, it will start when hot, but if I start it and only go for four or five miles its a bugger to start .... new battery, as per JB, will sort that :thumb

:beerjug:

Thanks for the replies lads. There is a new yuasa battery fitted. I'm leaning toward the battery because when it was run down it would start the bike after a recharge and hence easy starting during the day.

Well guys, new motobatt battery fitted and guess what. She still won't start. Now looking at purchasing a new RPM sensor @ €230 a pop. I hope to fuck this bike is worth all the time effort and money.

When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump priming up? it should be a buzz under the seat for a few seconds. If this isn't coming on it could just be a bad connection to the fuel pump that needs rectifying.

You could also pop the injector out and see if it is pumping fuel?

Bikes heritage

This bike must be the son a whore. That is all I will say at this stage.

Sidestand switch

This has been bypassed already. There's a new rpm sensor after been fitted and still it starts randomly. I don't think this will be an easy fix at this stage.

Turning over

Yeah it's turning over no problem. It just doesn't fire up. The mechanics are bewildered at this stage.

Maybe try the fuel filter,i had the same problems .
Back blow the old one ,before spending money on a new one ,i did a mod so i can renew just the filter .

And the beast rises. A combination of 3 issues had the lads stumped. The crankshaft pickup sensor was coming up as faulty on the diagnostics so it was replaced.. As a way of testing it and the starting issue it would be started a few times a day. All was well till the kill switch was used to stop the engine. The starting issues reappeared. It was noted when the kill switch was used that the pump wasn't working so a strip of the switch revealed a bad contact. During all of this the constant starting meant the battery had lost a bit of voltage and knowing how sensitive the 650 is to voltage they swapped the battery for a fully charged one. The lads noticed that a drop of 0.2 of a volt was the difference between starting or not starting. So thank f**k that saga is over. All that remains now is a bit of fabrication for fairing, lights etc before the off to Morocco.

You'd have been better keepin the 1100

I told ya so ages ago! :aidan

Good Luck with the trip :thumb

ACF 50 the switches and sidestand cut out and make sure the rectifier regulator is clean and not corroded behind (that way it can dissipate heat and not go tits up on you while you are away)

Fuchs Silkopen in the locks for tank and ignition etc
